So before all you “I wont work for less than £10 per hour” guys jump on guys working for crap rates, just hope you don’t find yourselves out of work and on the dole.
I’m not saying its right because its not…but that is the reality at this time
I’ll work for £7 ph if need be but it won’t be driving anything never mind an artic on any sort of work. And I would’nt be busting my hump either. I’ve done it in the past and I know about unemployment but if you think I’m going to sell my licence for £7 ph so some ■■■■■■■ ■■■■ of a gaffer can sit in his big house looking at his big car that’s not going to happen.
sounds like a glory job put you can not pay the bills with glory

We all know that £7 an hour is an insult. Trying to justify it on the grounds of ‘well for a newbie it’s a good way to learn the job’ is utter ■■■■■■■■. It might carry some weight if as part of the job you were undergoing some form of decent training from another far more experienced driver. But you aren’t. They want someone that’s stupid enough to work for ■■■■ all and they don’t care who it is or what their experience is -as long as they get on with it and don’t moan about how ■■■■■ the wage is.
Any HGV driver that takes that at that wage is merely making the wage situation worse, as well as proving how stupid they are.
Truckulent, drivingmissdaisey.
You just don’t get it. The unemployment people have changed the rules. They can track everything (you even have to use their site which tracks your job applications.)
They also have a section where your “adviser” can “recommend” jobs for you. What this really means is “force” you to apply.
Basically they will see you have an LGV licence so will “recommend” this £7 per hour job.
refuse to apply…benefits sanctioned. No ifs or buts. stopped.
They won’t accept your reasons in todays world. all they see is
You have a licence, there is a job now go and apply and get the ■■■■ off our books.
I had my benefit stopped for refusing to apply for a builders merchant job (hi-ab) because I didn’t have my hi-ab at the time. “the advert doesn’t say you need a hi-ab licence” was the reply I got. Even after arguing that I knew the industry because I was in it and that I knew you did need a hi-ab licence made no difference.
Like I said, its not right, but its the hard truth in todays society.
(And £7ph is better than zero income because your money is stopped)

Why didn’t you apply to the builder’s merchant job ? Surely 15-30 mins of your time was more important than loss of benefits and you wouldn’t have got the job anyway. . Regarding this job … We all remember Spud from trainspotting , easy to fail an interview especially if your experienced in the trade
Apply for the job then fail to impress at interview…duh! Are you on the rock 'n roll then Semtex?
Edit to add; SNAP!

I’m liking that!
Me too, that ones flagged in the fast diminishing memory bank for when needed…
Just out of interest, how much would a “proper” hourly rate be for a heavy haulage driver?

Not anymore, got a nice job running trailers into Immingham from Manchester on nights.

If it was for one of the bigger builders merchant they would have almost certainly trained you regardless of whether you had a ticket or not.
I done builders merchant work and its good, certainly tests your driving skill and its probably one of the last areas in haulage where you’ll get laughed at for not being able to tie a dolly.
No, this would like a slap in the face
I’d say £10 is a minimum for class 1… Heavy haulage or any sort of difficult jobs should be paid more IMHO
£7 sounds about right for any … FOOL… that wants the responsibility for hauling STGO about. As for it being a stepping stone, any driver wanting to do STGO should accompany an experienced driver for 1 year just to learn how to secure the loads. Its just not chain here and a strap there.Ive seen lads blag there way into jobs like this only to cause mayhem on there first load . At least £11.00 ph
I couldn’t afford to pay the mortgage and bills on £7 an hour, I have driven Class C for 4 years now and wanted to get some experience on Artics I eventually got offered an artic job for under £8 an hour, I politely declined and stuck with the ridgeds the company said to me theres still a job for you if you change you mind. experience is nice but my overheads simply won’t cope with under £8 an hour.
You can earn more than £7/hour doing home shopping delivery work for a supermarket driving a van.
Tesco and Sainsbury’s both pay £7.21/hour to drivers afaik.
I can’t say I’ve met a driver this week that was worth £7 an hour.
In fact, I could name three who the firm would be better off if they gave them £100 and just asked them to stay at home…
