I agree with you Dave they did stand out from the crowd, A pal of mine drove one for Rankins in Newcastle & they gave him another motor he left & went to work for Associated Lead driving a 8 wheel ERF, On journey work & he was there until he retired, But he allways spoke well of Rankins & their well kept motors Leylands & Commers in those good old happy days Eh, Regards Larry.

Aye your right Duncan, I drove an old 8 wheeler Thornycroft in the 50s & the body was only 24ft, so the overall length was just about 30ft, How things have changed Eh, Regards Larry PS & NO PAS.
how on earth the “retired generation” managed eight wheelers , and Chinese sixes , fully loaded with nee power steering / , my father was only 5 ft 6 , and 10 stone , I often wondered why he whipped the steering round while sharply letting the clutch out ? you lot must have been like popeye on spinach … roping and sheeting , no pwr steering , no heating , no brakes , jesus …
P.S . I watched hell drivers the other day , hmmmmmm, good old days ?
