Last time I looked Scotland was part of United kingdom.
There’s the problem, you don’t see a Pole or a Latvian telling you that he’s from a certain part of the country, he(she) is a Pole or a Latvian or what ever other country others come from. They seem to have more pride than we do, how do I know that, i’ve been married to a Polish girl for the last 10 years. She says she is proud to be polish but her home is here and she tends to agree with me on this subject. In her opinion we have lost a sense of pride in this country. (end of rant).

The UK isn’t a country Paul, it’s a union of different countries, Scotland, England, Wales (principality technically not a country) and Northern Ireland. I think your point is that we’re ALL in this one together but some ■■■■■ can’t see the bigger picture and have to destroy the discussion with their small mindedness! Concentrate on what really matters you ■■■■■■■■

so your saying i shouldnt be proud of the COUNTRY i live in but rather be proud of the union of countries that make up the uk?
Paul-H:

Its not that we have lost our pride, it’s the fact that it has been knocked out of us …
How can I be proud of my Country when the people who are supposed to be running it feel that they need to make bogus claims on houses they don’t have, on their weekly shopping and much more. Some of them were actually claiming 5 digit sums on top of their salary? We all need to learn from these people and look after #1
This might answer it, I was born in London which makes me English but on my passport (and yours if you have one) it says ‘British Citizen’, so should i pettition the Government to change it to ‘English Citizen’. No mate, English, British i’m proud to be them ALL. Be proud even if we’ve had the [zb] kicked out of us, what happened to the Stiff Upper lip. Pride is FREE.
The thing that i can’t get my head round is we have say 1.5 million unemployed in the UK and say 1.5 million immigrant workers ( that we know of ) Yet the Government still has not put anything substantial in place to rectifie the problem. Ok they have put in a points system for certain country’s now ( horse and gate ) they obviously did not think in the first place what the open door policy would do when they so proudly announced it.
I think i am right in saying that only the UK and Ireland adopted the open door policy, the rest of Europe decided to limit the amount of immigrant labour allowed, but i think even this has fell on its arse as they could not police it, or did not have the system set up in the first place, or they could not enforce it as after all we are all European, part of the European Community, and if i read it right this gives us Europeans the right to travel hassle free to anywhere in the EC we like and live and work there. Was that not the point of it all in the first place?
Now i’m going to mention the French now ( its ok fire away i’ve got broad shoulders ) Any one remember one of their presidents with a rather large hooter, when we first applied to join the Common Market as it was known then, he was dead against letting the UK join, but we had an even more determined ■■■■ called Ted Heath ( all laugh and shake your shoulders ) Who was determined that the UK would not lose out to the rest of Europe.
So lets hear it for Ted Heath and the CONservative party if it was not for their determination the UK would not be part of the EU
And as for old big nose De Gaulle, the only time the French got it right and we ignored them.

No I’m saying we’re talking about the adverse effect uncontrolled immigration has had on this industry we work in and people like you want to beat your chest about where you were born instead of concentrating on the problem!

thing is it may say on my passport that im a british citizen but thats only a bit of paper and some laminate, if anyone asks where im from its always scotland, i will always be a scotsman no matter what and i will stick to my guns about my roots.unfortunatly we have a blind fifer in no10 which is a bit of a burger but hey nothing in life is perfect
I never seen two driver’s in one Nolan truck.
At the end of the day the Eastern Europeans have the right to come and work here, just the same as we have the right to go and work in Spain, France, Germany or wherever. I’m speaking from the personal experience of people I know and who live around me, for every one bloke who is on the dole, gutted about that and doing whatever he can to put food on the table, there are three who aren’t interested in looking for work and want to just sit on the dole or incapacity benefit and father kids they have no intention of paying for, but it’s ok because the mothers now have an extra mouth to feed so they can get that bit extra from the govt. And the system is set up to provide help with childcare and to top up wages so people with children can still work but they don’t want to know.

As for “minimum going rates enforcable” - this limites the competition and stop people from trying hard.Is that not exactly what constantly changing and more restrictive tachgraph legislation has been doing over the past few years ?
Is that not exactly what the 48 hour working week is supposed to do ?stopping you from working hard and earning a bit more
Yeah, but if not the tachos (let’s put away for a moment the particular absurds of the tacho law) there will be too many happy to drive 24 hours per day to earn more. And it can’t be like that…
So tacho in general - yes.

But look back 20 years, do you think that Latvians were considering themselves as Soviets? Look back 100 years, Poland was divided between Tzarist Russian Empire, Austro-Hungary and Prussia, yet all Pole you would ask will tell you that he’s Polish.
And last but not least: I like Poland, and I will defend it when someone will be telling some wrong things about that if it will be untrue. But I don’t understand all this hassle with patriotism: It’s not my merit that I am Polish, neither it’s my choice. I was just born there, I could be Born in London or in Etiopia - I had no choice. Why I should be particulary proud of being Polish/English/Etiopian?
Yes, the Polish/English/Ethiopian heritage is for sure great, I as the Pole/Englishman/Etiopian know it to the roots and I am happy to share with you the goods of it, but to be proud of the country itself?
For me it’s strange. Wasn’t that Einstein who said that patriotism and religion caused most, if not all, wars? I would second that.

Yet my friends, who is a supervisor in small sandwich making factory is looking for workers quite often. Every time when she gives out jobcentre adverts, 99% of people sending CV are eastern europeans. And that is not too bad place to work, a few Scots are working there for years.
So where are these all unemployed Britons?

this discussion is amazing
you know what, we can actually kill all the foreigners, even those who came over here long time ago, set up their businesses and gave us jobs. Let’s just kill them, then we can pull out of the EU, put up a massive fence at the borders and create kinda British workforce reservation, and then I will go to the continent, become a travel agent and start organizing trips for people with cameras to observe rare species
Don’t think you get £600 or more a week as a cowboy driver. We joined the EU, competition is much more intense and if you wan’t to be better off, start learning, invest in yourself, invest in future just like the countries across the Channel, 'cos they seem to be a few steps futher.
Why am I supposed to be happy about that?
Just for the record a lot of them are of course good lads who under different circumstances I’d be happy to work with and I personally regret the way I feel about this situation that’s not of their making. It’s just greed. On the part of the business community that is. You can call me all the names you like but I’ve had enough of the British worker getting [zb] on and won’t be silent on this issue.
No one’s gonna call you names, the thing is no one listens to you mate, but people can start listening to you if you find your place in the EU, develop, adapt, take a risk, maybe set up your bisuness, who knows, there are much more opportunities out there than it was ten years ago and it is a pure capitalism, it is the strongest unit that wins. Good luck, anyway.
Regards,
Simon
