New 8x4 tipper

It has been suggested that I have not been singing the praises of my new truck it remains a pleasure to drive and very productive.

I must of missed that then. What motor have you got

Saw a Longcliffe MAN 14 plate at Carsington yesterday, looked well smart.

Tarmac has some sort of Volvo in disguise Tom. :open_mouth: :unamused:

Renault?

?

Mainly new Scania’s in this area, as Volvo’s are hard to get. Daf’s are out of favour in rigid form.

My boss is looking for a new 8wheeler. We do probably 60% muck shifting, 30% aggregates and 10% topsoil. We have an 09 reg Daf CF 360 (excellent truck) and my boss has asked for quotes on the equivalent Euro 6 version. Chassis was quoted at £102k. Boss has asked for my input regarding spec etc.
I’m not too choosy regarding makes as I can’t have my first choice (Foden :frowning: ) and aslong as it’s not an Iveco. Daf, Mercedes and MAN dealerships are very close to our yard, Volvo and Scania not too far either. What do people recommend?
Body wise, I’m keen on Boweld for their Taperlite and Aggrelite models. Boss is really pleased with the 8wheelers’ Thompson Loadmaster but with Euro 6 and all the nonsensical bolt on stuff now fitted, it’ll be too heavy. Don’t suggest alloy bodies, I have one on my 6wheeler (which is being sold) and I dread rainy days.

Forgot to say, boss is getting a quote for a standard CF and a CF Construction, auto box, and 11litre 400bhp engine. He thought I’d want something more powerful (and with a manual 'box) but for the work we do I think it’s adequate. I’ve asked him to get quotes on a MAN 32-400 (not the 35-400) and a Volvo FMX 410 with I-Shift. Any guesses on which will be most expensive and the cheapest?

Out of the three you mention I think the fmx will be the most expensive but also the best at resale. The new daf looks a like a great truck but not upto the volvo and I bet close on price. I had a boweld muck light on an fm 410 good versatile body with nearly the magic 20 t payload. Try for an auto tailgate (air law on the boweld) great for tipping on a boggy landfill tip and then travel to good ground and secure.

Daf contacted my boss today to ask what he thought of the quote. He said he will ask MAN for a quote. Boss seems keen on the Boweld Aggrelite, probably with a standard truck chassis instead of a construction one as neither of our trucks are “heavy duty” types and have lasted well.
Our 8wheeler has a 15m3 body but to save weight we’ll probably have a 14m3 with the new one. Less chance of small diggers spilling muck down the sides too (in theory).

Mercedes Aroc, seems to be getting good reviews from muckshift hauliers.

Their website has a very good truck designer feature, Dave. Well worth a play, I mean look. The Arocs looks tough but just looks too heavy. I’ve not seen one that carries much more than 18t.

The only thing with the standard chassis over construction on new models I’d they have poor ground clearance.
Our roll ons have the standard volvo chassis and all though they very rarely go on a tip when they do they end up blading the tip in muddy conditions.

I’d agree with this, there’s one Volvo tipper working with our DAF that wasn’t built on a construction chassis (cancelled order) and it spends a lot of time scraping over sites.

Hills (Swindon) have new FMs and they carry 19.5t with Charlton Superlite bodies.

I’ve emailed Boweld, asking how much the Taperlite and Aggrelite bodies would weigh in 8wheeler form with 14m3 bodies with auto sheet and airclaw tailgate. Do you have to manually secure the switch with the airclaw or is it like the Thompson auto tailgate?

Is the FM 19.5t top draw nowadays for a modern 8x4 with a steel body?

Yes, even seen some alloy bodied ones with similar payloads. I thought I was seeingthings when I saw Hills lorry with “19.5” on the side.
Too much junk like cycle safety bars, adblue etc on tippers nowadays. Now they’ve had the great idea of rear underrun bars. :unamused: Is it illegal to have these removed? All they’ll do is harbour mud and stones.

Some things can be removed, they are fitted for the new whole vehicle type approval regulations and not yet required for test, having said that I wonder how long it will be before they are!
