Magirus Deutz

Does anyone have any pics of a UK registered Magirus deutz 310D (or simular). I love the look of these old bonneted beauties, and the only ones I can find are off the road examples (e.g. onsite only) or none UK registered.

Cheers

Geezah

My dad drove many a deutz 8wheel tipper through the 80s and early 90s on muck away work in london and says they were a good truck for that work in there day.
recons they were great off road a lot more modern and comftable than the scammell routeman and fodens that were the there brit competitors. And said they required a lot less maintence and greasing etc.
He said power steering pumps and gearboxes were a weak point though
I used to work for a firm that ran a h reg iveco 300-30 hookloader that had the deutz engine fitted and it wasnt a bad truck to be fair

I drove this Maggie for a while for Peter Green when he
moved from Northampton to Southampton.
I,m a bit embarrassed about the flags now

i served my time as a fitter at Stillers in the mid 70,s , I remember they had 4 or 5 maggies units then. They were about E reg i think , One was a 6 x 4 double drive , was used on heavy work ,then was used for shunting, God help the shunter, , I could never master the non synchro gearbox , just driving them around the yard!
Mind you i carnt remeber them in the workshop much either, apart from usual services, No comparison to the 86,s and 88,s in the fleet then

Nev,l found this…dont know who took the pic or any info

McGregor-Cory in Southampton had a fleet of these 8wheelers they had removable tipper bodies on twistlocks, so the could do 20’ containers as well

Thnks bubbleman
that colour pic used to be on the stillers website gallery , and thats the 6 x 4 i mentioned earlier., Those Hoynor trailers were a night mare, the donkey eng was a pain, and you had to drop the red line of to tip, as the bogie moved forward, but i remember that ‘E’ reg unit well

A couple more rom Bubbleman.

Hi GeorgieBoy,
Ian was a lot slimmer in those days !! Saw his brother Dave at Ower services a few weeks ago driving for IsoTank said he was off to Aussie again asap, many happy hours running with him over the water.
Is your dad Mr Harris, or Mr Newman ? :unamused: :unamused:
Regards
Richard

“Weather good, sky blue, road straight & empty - we crashed!!”
The fault was with the loaders. They loaded the bales on each side of the trailer but left a gap down the middle. He loaded in Porto & road transport was still new down there & the job was done by old time dockers.[ I once loaded sacks of nuts there for Germany. They made a stack as high as the roof but left a gap each side of the floor making the whole thing v. unstable]
There was also a passenger in that truck. A Portuguese customs officer who had to accompany the load from the docks to the frontier to get a seal. Ian said that the cop went thru the window & rolled head first over & over down the field when the truck went over.
Nobody hurt,btw.
