Nice comment HARRY  And I particularly liked Charlies comment.
That Atki must be goin someā€¦

Does anyone remember Macgregor Cory? They had a whole fleet a maggie 8 wheeler tippers here in Southampton with removeable tipper bodies on 20ā€™ twist locks so they could do container work as well.

It was a nice idea but donā€™t think it was that sucessful as they all suffered that great Maggie curse VERY POOR fuel consumption!

I seem to remember Harline Transport (Southampton) had 3 maggies on traction for STS in Europe in their colours for a few years too.

regards Pat

McGregor Cory Pat, isnā€™t that where our old friend Nobby (Derek) Golding came from before commencing freelance ?

Possibly TIR but I believe there was a fitter there called ā€˜Rayā€™ and he and TM Peter Payne went to work for Jimmy Alford when he bought them out (less the Maggies I seem to remember)

Pat

Re Harline and his three Maggies. Was not Colin Harris and Bob Newman in partenership wnen he had those? Of course I maybe wrong as I am a lot these days.I seem to remember Jim Street,Les Charles,And Bob The Hat driving them.Go on someone make me wrong. It was a long time ago.Where are you TIR when you are needed

Yes you are spot on young man!!

I think they were even running as Robert Newman Transport! Colin the bought Bob out and started Harline (the start of Harris and the end of his wife Paulineā€™s names)

They ran out of the yard opposite me at Nursling Les then went on for John ward and ran iito a parapit I think (allegedly he was having blackouts and did not tell anyone) Bob went on his own I did some work for him but he unfortunately lost out when some of the people he worked for went bust (and then started again same phones/offices/people) He now live by Paultons Park drives a lowloader for Ray Ransome R&W Plant.

Pat said do you remember Humptyback Haulage?

Pat

Could be in ā€œsilent seventhā€!

By the look of him Chris he was shifting.See him leaning over the wheel to get more momentem. :smiling_imp:

  . I remember doing that to get more speed or power.Didnā€™t work but made yer feel better!
God knows you needed all the help you could get in an Albion Reiver or an AEC MK3 8-legger.

IHi Chris. I had an AEC Marshall with a 505 engine.Loved down hills.Hated going up the other side.Used silent seventh a lot

Eyup Charlie.Yes the 505 was ok in the 4-legger Mercury but struggled in a Marshall.I had a Marshall sometimes when on market work :open_mouth: (Englandā€™s only an island gaffer) but it would fly on the flat.
Racing back norf with Trowbridge from Sheffield and their Mercurys, hardly owt about on the M1 especially after Watford Gap. Great shifts - Abbey Wood or Charlton trailer change and back to Sheffield.
Used to struggle to keep up with Atlas Express from Coalville with a few parcels in the back of their trailers - canā€™t remember if they had D1000s or what in 1969.

The only good Maggieā€¦is a dead Maggie.

Lawsons Haulage of Cockermouth ran a fleet of Magirus Deutzā€™s.

My dad drove two for Harrisons a ā€˜Pā€™ reg one paited in Davies Turnerā€™s colours which had a big disagreement with an Iranian fire engine in itā€™s first trip which earnt him 30 days in prison. :frowning:

Then he had a new 310 TNX 363R. Kermit drove itā€™s sister TNX 362R.

Not a patch on the brand new 2800 Dafs they had a few years later :exclamation:

i remember seeing a few spanish maggies come through poole docks a few years ago,
Doman springs to mind, the one i saw regularly even had an extended cab,
probably home made,
looked like a maggie longline,lolā€¦

jeffreys haulage from woodville in derbyshire had a large fleet of maggie 8 wheeler tippers in the70s/ 80s,doing opencast coal and stone, they were that underpowered they needed a push to get going by the loader even on level ground.they had loads of them over the yrs so they carnt have been that bad.or were they a cheap 8 legger at the time.
