aye he did him and my grandad used to make excuses on a suday morning to check their leeks and come back mortal drunk juicy would often have his sun dinner at my nanas then the best bit especially for me they would end up talking about wagons both of them telling me I wanted nothing to do with wagons but as they say ended up in the blood and I now work at Colton plant hire. I knew Kenny Dodds when I left school. He was still at Cawthorns yard when I started my apprenticeship, it was then called Birtley commercials, the Iveco dealer. Left there and went to work for Lincoln haulage and we had two A reg Iveco’s when they first come out. You’ll probably know Harry Morgan - not sure if he worked at Cawthorns but he was there at Birtley commercials and he ended up at Billy Corden’s. When I started as an apprentice fitter at Barkers they had a load of Maggies, 232s and despite what everybody says we hardly had any bother with any of them. Was that down to good trucks or just good fitters?! The fitter at the time being Stuart Finley or stuttering Stu we used to call him! Wonder if this fetches back any memories?
Regards, Allen

I left cawthorns in 1979, I often see Kenny Taylor who was the electrian at cawthorns, I knew billy cordon is he still around, a good mate of mine worked for norman miller his name is kenny burdis he was also a pal of billy do you know him, the lad Stuart did he work at joe lees

Hiya Rich! Billy Corden’s still alive although I’ve never seen him walking about for a while - he still lives at North Lodge. I knew Kenny very well - he ended up living just up the street from me but sadly passed away recently - it was his funeral 2 weeks ago. It was cancer - shame, cos he was a lovely bloke - and yes, Stuart did work at Joe Lee’s after Barker’s but he too had a heart attack a couple of years ago - he’s fine though but I don’t know if he’s still working as he’ll be coming up to retiring age. Aye, getting old’s not all it’s cracked up to be mate!
Regards, Allen

Allen is the Kenny you say who has passed away is Kenny Burdis,he lived at Ouston and worked at a road management company,he worked for premier waste for a long time

hiya richie sadly yes it was kenny burdis like i said he lived just up the street from me. Knew him when he worked at Norman Miller’s, then he was at Premier Waste for a long time, then finished off at a traffic management company. His son Chris was at Volvo - he’s now at Par Petroleum, Fencehouses and since his dad passed away, he’s moved back in with his mam. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news mate. Regards, Allen

Allen I lost touch with Kenny when he left premier, I worked with him for a long while when we worked at coatseys, last spoke to him a few months ago on the phone, am shocked that he has passed away a great lad, cheers for your help at a very very sad time, Richie

Hi Richie
Can you remember a fitter at Cawthorns called Terry (cant remember his surname) he served his time there. He came to Grady Halls from Cawthorns in the early 80s so i think he would have served his time there in late sixties early seventies
regards
mick

Those names are a blast from the past. Juice Bell, Brian Robson, Billy Witherspoon.
Albert Adey, Geordie Beatty. The Red House crowd!! what memories.
regards kevmac47. Oops I forgot Big Chappie.

Mick the you are on about is Terry Clark he was the only apprentice kept on when he came out of his time, think he ended up at sita waste as a fitter the a driver, wonder if he is still around cheers Richie

isnt this a young mike harris?

is this an ex Ryan transport truck?

Its nice to see that I wasn’t the only one that got greased up to the eyeballs driving one of them things.

To all of you mis-informed people on here. The maggie 232 eight wheeler was head and shoulders above any other on/off road 30 tonne truck during the 70’s and 80’s and would go places that the all of your hino’s man’s renaults etc, etc will not go even now. They were as roland rat says abused by their operators re- service and maintenace!!. I have seen scammells, fodens,e.r.f’s and numerous other marques bogged down on road construction sites but rarely would you see a maggie stuck. Probably not the most comfortable truck for your long distance/continental work and a bit on the thirsty side, but a fantastic piece of german engineering and virtually unbreakable, and boy did they have to take some abuse. I saw on numerous occasions on the M180 construction them being hand brake turned in a clay pit (LOADED), i kid you not!!

Anyone remember Franky Mullen from South Shields, He ran a Maggi 8 wheeler out of Tilcons Hawthorn Quarry in the 70s, He also used to to the Spratts , from Union Quay at North Shields for Caley Fisheries, & Richard Irvins, down to Hull & Grimsby, a real nice bloke to work with, Regards Larry.
