Magirus Deutz

my contribution - both taken by Roger Kenney

Another Maggi operator comes to mind Tony Hall from Ulgham Widdrington, he ran a few of these, he had a brand new on, which was displayed at the Kelvin Hall motor show, S REG, if my memmorie is right, this was an 8 wheeler, but he did have some artics as well, Any photos about ? Regards Larry.

Evening all, retreiver, those are really evocotive and memorable images, thank you for sharing them. Cheerio for now.

To push up this topic a little, here’s another “Transeuropa”- Maggie.
I took this picture in 2004 near Valparaiso/Chile.
She looks a little bit tired…

I remember seeing this old maggie running out of Hiltons old yard when i was still at school

Hi MOC!

The Pluto COE is a real rare truck nowerdays, even in germany.
I believe the Plutos that are still existing are countable on one hand.

Here is another TE-Magirus but this time from the very first series still working in Chile in 2002.

Here are some photos of Magirus I took 2007 when a large group of German veteran lorries visited Gothenburg… and my favourite is the little Sirius

Hi Unterflur a few more pics for this thread

Hi MOC!

There are two Saturns like on your first picture under restauration at the moment in germany.
Hope to see one of them in this season.

The chinese-six on the second picture (i think that’s what you call them) is one of my favorite trucks in the german oldtimer-scene.
I only know one more but with a daycab.

The Mercur on your third picture was the first truck that i had in 1998. Not exactly this one but same type.

I attached a picture i took on the panamericana in chile in 2007.
You can see that the motor had a serious breakdown.
There is oil all over the trailer and on the tarmac.
For me this is a real stunning truck!

A couple of Magi’s from 1973. They were Ogden’s of Otley but were based at Bowburn, Co. Durham.

Can anyone shed any light on this beast? I thought the biggest forward control Maggie was the 310 with the V10 engine, but this book shows one with a 340 V12.

What model is it, and was it on general sale, a heavy haulage special or military only?

PS apologies for the lousy photo: my flatbed scanner is u/s and my camera hand is better suited to other activities!

Hi (zb) anorak,

The Italians ran them, If I remember it was a 360 model and had the V12 engine same cab as the 310, tractor unit would pull a house down, they used them on general and heavy haulage.

I was on the boat to Sardinia with my wife and another English guy one day,we each had 20 tons on,Italian pulls up with a 360 and says “you English are crazy, you come all the way from England with 3 lorries with 60 tons, and I have that on 1 lorry” with that he roared away with no baffles in the exhaust and doing about 3 mpg !! ( diesel was only 500 lira a litre then)

Regards
Richard

Thanks Richard. I wonder if any survive? The preservation/show scene would certainly be a bit noisier with one of those around.

Hi Ron just found them, what a blast from the past, Eddie

There was one at gaydon 310 tractor unit. I’m surprised Tony McGovern hasn’t got one he has quite a nice preserved fleet and was a big deutz operator. I’m sure he was the first to run the8 wheelers in London.

I just came across this Maggie thread, and being an ex 70’s M/E Maggie driver I have to comment. I had a 240 then a 310 and was one of the most reliable and comfortable trucks I drove. The secret was to keep the fins clear, pressure wash them out get rid of the sand buildup. Only once in 2 years did I melt a piston, and that was in Turkey. On the side of the road I removed the #6 pot, dropped the pan and removed the rod and piston. Beat the injector line flat to seal it, and finished the trip on 9. As I remember I lost a day and a half, thanks to who invented silicone  This is a picture of my Maggie on a Saudi run to Jeddah.

A good yarn that one mate,if you pulled out a piston and rod what did you do to maintain oil pressure?

If you take out the con rod what’s going to stop oil from leaking out of the big end journal?

Been a long time ago, but trying to remember. I think I used a screw that I hammered into the crank shaft, don’t exactly remember. But as you know we did a lot of n g er riggin in those days, oops! afro engineering. Do you remember me Jamie? I also made some trips for SI was in the hosp in Tehran for about a month, after a hernia strangulated. Geoffrey flew a driver out to carry me home, I think it was Bill.

Just remembered we used a peice of a can cut out with a knife, used silicone to seal and 4 hose clamps. balance was off but it worked.
