M/E Spec White Road commander

Possibly a demonstrator or from a cancelled export-order, DeMeulemeester from Tielt (Belgium)
drove this 6x4 with airco and perhaps other M/E ventions. The trailer is from Dossche, a supplier
from agricultural products.

Apologies if this was posted earlier…

One of my old Truckfest pic’s i found

Positive ground 12 volt electrics ? Must have been even more unreliable than Transconti ? And 3,5 inch front brakes… Seems like american manufacturers were not very interested about european markets when they didnt spec them right for us. 24 volts, big brakes and axles, working suspension, think how much for example K100 would have sold in the 70s/80s.

This one WON363T that i owned in about 1989 would snap your spine when running solo had no curtains around the windscreen just a curtain with a zip in front of the bed air wipers which i swopped for elecric ones from a scammell tipper a circular pattern 9 speed fuller.all the switches were different shapes and randomly scatterd.the seat and bed were comfy

Atmospheric pic’! Regards Chris

I remember a bloke, a nice little bloke who owned and drove a White RC2 doing mostly Italy for AMG Freight in Essex. His name was Eric Benford, does anybody remember this man and machine. I met him quite by accident when AMG had loaded him for Greece. We met on the quayside in Brindisi, and he asked me if he could follow me from Patras to Pireaus as it was his first time. Well we sailed over had a few beers and got along fine. Got off the Ferry, did Customs and Set off for Pireaus. I said to him we always stop at the Corinth Canal for a few Beers and a Souvlaki, then we get to St.Nikalaus Square to wait for the Customs Runners. To collect the papers before we can get Customs Clearance. So off we went, we hadn’t gone more than 20 or 30 kms when he flashed me, he said are you OK because I can smell burning. No I said, we checked over my unit and trailer nothing, so off we go again. When we arrived at Corinth, we were under bright arc lamps, and he said I can still smell the burning. Well then we noticed, he had been following me right on my tail, I was loaded with 18 tonnes of International Marine Paints, with ten ton of good paying Groupage stacked on the top of it. Of course I had got the usual leaker amongst the paint dripping out. It was amazing the complete front and bits of the sides of the White RC2 were covered in tiny pinhead dots of paint, windows screen, everywhere… Actually the effect was quite fantastic, you could never reproduce it. We cleaned off the Screen and Windows with a Deisel soaked cloth. Had our Beers and Souvlakis and carried on to Piraeus. He never said another word about it. The last time I saw him was about 15 years ago, he was tipping in a Transport Company just up the road from me. He asked them where I lived and he came visiting. So we went for a good old boozy night in Pickering. He was then divorced, no truck of his own, and living on a barge with another lady somewhere in the Greater London Area. Does anybody remember this man and his White RC2. I have often wondered what became of them

Ran with Eric a few times Archie, his old White started off silver with blue stripes but with the passing of time slowly turned black with the amount of new panels he had to put on it. I know he attends the xmas reunion each year so he is still going strong

Hullo Jacko22,
What time this year will you hold this reunion.( dates and place ) I know it’s an XMAS thing bit If I am in England at that time I will make a point of going to it. Might even bump into a few more that I knew.
Cheers, Archie.

Never been to one myself archie but Bob Cairns normally posts up pictures of the events each year, normally i think around the start of December they are held at a pub in Avely essex, one of Dons Donkeys old drivers now runs. From past pictures it looks like most of the old faces attend each year!

Hullo jacko22,
Ah yes I know about this do, I speak to Bob Cairns, in one way or another each week. That gathering is almost completely attended by McKellars drivers or Dons Donkeys, most of them having done time on both companies anyway. It’s usually held in Big Arthur’s Pub I believe. However I don’t think its the sort of do that Eric would attend. The last time I saw Eric was about 17 years ago. I had just got in from doing a job, when my missus said," there’s been a bloke on the phone for you, he’s up at Slaters Yard, he can’t tip tonight and he’s stuck. He knew you lived nearby so he asked in the Office, they gave him your number.
So obviously off I went to pick him up and fetch him home for a meal. Then later on we crept out for a few beers. He no longer had the White, he was driving for a firm in Kent I think. He had left his Wife, in doing so he lost his House and Car, and was living in a Caravan or a Houseboat somewhere near Yalding with a Woman. He seemed to have been through a bit of a bad time all in all. I would like to see him again as he was a good bloke. I shall ask Bob, he lives in Kent, if he knows anything, And I shall also ask him about the next do.

It doesn’t bother me, because I not bothered who looks at my photos, but these 2 are mine, I took them in France when I was week-ended with this RC2 & 4 or 5 other Brits on my way to Italy. Regards Chris

Yes that’s fine, no worries, as I say I think pics are for looking at! I was saying it more so people knew where they were taken in case someone knew where the load was going etc, or had any more info that may be of interest. Regards Chris

It was ‘lost’ for quite some time but I now found a White Service Manual again
on the Road Commander 2 out of which I selected the “Cab section”-chapter.

Have fun!
