M/E Spec White Road commander

A bit of a long shot here but does anyone know of a good uk spec cab for sale for a RC2? Or any contact details for classic truck breakers who may be able to source one.

That story about Gerry was very moving and an illustration of life’s iniquities. If he’d had a decent lawyer things might have been very different.

Does anyone remember a guy in the seventies with a Road Commander bearing the name ‘outlaw’?

I can’t remember his name but I took him on his first ‘makee learn’ trip to Turkey on OHS.

Just remembered his surname was Maxwell. Somewhere I’ve got a photo of him next to his Mack on OHS which I’ll post later.

Here’s a picture of Mr. Maxwell standing next to my GMC.

Came here to Oz early 90’s and have never seen one real ‘gud en’ like you used to in U.K. Europe & States, here there all Kenworth…Kenworth…Kenworth…Mack…Volvo…Scania.

Mention the name White and you get this look :open_mouth: :astonished: followed by Ohhh…yeah i remember em

Here’s my old gal. Geneva Show Model White Commander 2 Swiss reg. I used to do Swiss-Portugal-Hamburg-Swiss with that & it broke down every trip. They took me off a nice DAF wagon+drag to drive that & after a few trips I jacked in rather than drive it. In those days there were v.few M/ways in Spain & none in Portugal so they were hopeless on the old mountain tracks. Most uncomfortable international rig I have ever driven.
Only good for sleeping in.

Scan 'em.

This is what you want for M?E work. Comfortable,Reliable,& Powerful! Started at the touch of the button @ -34C & would pull up icey slopes where aritics had given up. Forget the old USA boneshakers, they only look good from across the road!

Never forget the mighty…

I know its a Freightliner, but White were merged with them in the States so its the closest thread on here. Pictured in BP garage at Milton/Didcot Oxon A34 a couple of months ago! Couldn’t get round the front for a better angle.

Hi adr,
I don’t think Freightliner merged with White in the States, it was Volvo that took them over. The first Whites produced in the USA after the Volvo takeover had the Volvo “diagonal stripe” on the radiator grille. I don’t know if this has been covered anywhere else on this forum, but I’m sure this is the case

Geez Harry that’s one beaut looking White shame it was so unreliable, looks like it had a ■■■■■■■ in her did it! Mine had 3406 Cat 325bhp and was the most reliable truck i have ever had / drove.

I bought a cab air bag suspension kit from the states and it made it as comfy as any Euro gear (at the time) and the best heater

o.k here goes with a few old pics, i hope they turn out o.k. i have only ever up-loaded digital before.

Brand new - first day she was delivered down from Newcastle

Original paint job never lasted many years (the ally cabs from White wasn’t properly acid prepped like Kenworth / Petes ect) so she had several spray jobs as you’ll see

glen; This one was probably a lemon. It had a 350 ■■■■■■■ & airbags on the rear. That snap was the end of a round trip ,Swiss-Portugal-Swiss & I had driven home with a faulty alternator, you could only get spares in Swiss. The next trip was Swiss -Portugal-Hamburg-Basel & in Porto the valve on the n/s airbag went & I had to limp back to Swiss where they cannibalised a new White to replace my faulty valve. On those Portuguese old mountain tracks it was hard to keep on the road ,the front wheels used to feather off to the side on any rough ground. The air-ride seat was the same system as a bicycle pump -one weight fits all! If you went over a bump the seat bounced your head on the roof. In parts of Spain -Palencia, I used to have to stand up to drive across the ruts or I would have held all the traffic up. At times I thought the windscreen was going to fall out with the terrible front suspension. At the back of the cab was a small compressor to lift the cab but no lock on it. So if someone played a trick while you were sleeping the cab could tilt right over. The wheel studs were hollow,to save weight so in Germany the fitter tore it right off because he was undoing it the wrong way.On a motorway, fully freighted ,she was great & the old Jake Brake worked a treat but once you got out of France in the old days It was hard going with that truck.
One thing I will ask you -did you ever drop down into Hi-Range crawler? It goes in like butter but it was fingers crossed the first time I did it.
