Cheers Dean - I hadn’t seen that one before! robert
In addition to vehicle brochures and spec sheets, the Leyland Vehicles publicity department produced many items for use as ‘give-aways’ at motor shows. I have, (in my kitchen cupboard), a box of book matches advertising the Leyland Marathon 2. The box originally contained 50 books of matches. There are still 28 left and they still work.
With help from a magnifying glass, the vehicle pictured on the cover appears to be RHD and registered CFV327S:
No details, but someone might recognise the Reg.No. EDF 378Y. Chris
An interesting article posted today by DEANB on the AEC thread, shows that from 1980 the European-spec Marathon continued with the TL12 lump, whilst its British-spec counterparts enjoyed the ■■■■■■■ E290 14-litre engine. Here’s the link:

I`ve just read it Robert , very interesting
This Marathon had the TL12 in her, ex-Unipart Racing Team, she was transferred onto our own British Leyland fleet at Cowley, Oxford for the princely sum of £1 when she had finished her racing team days. My very good friend Dennis Thompson (Den’) RIP, bought her just to play with, as you can see she looked the Dogs-Danglers, we were going to start taking her round the shows, but Dennis used to keep her in a barn up on his small-holding where he kept Cattle/Sheep/Chickens & the meanest Guard-Cat you have ever come across . 1 night the barn caught fire, & the old Marathon was burnt to a crisp , Den’ was mortified! Den’ is pictured here next to the Marathon, & with his Roadtrain, fleet wagon or not if it was Den’s it had to look the business , the twin-stacks & the air-horns on the Roadtrain were actually salvaged off the Marathon! Den was a real Old-School Lorry Driver, hard as nails but would help anyone out, ran his own small-fleet of tippers for a few years, 1 of the nicest blokes you could ever meet who never lost his enthusiasm for lorries or for the job,& he taught me loads! Regards Chris
Great photos Chris, I never ever saw the Marathon so this is a surprise , his Roadtrain was the best by far and Den was a true lorry driver.

Hi Steve. The Marathon was a beauty mate, I drove her a few times & she was a real flyer Den had his small-holding up Horspath, nice & quiet tucked away, peaceful with Barns/outbuildings/sheds etc never knew how he kept going all those years, he used to do the Night-trunk down South Wales & then work on his land/animals all day, he had who knows how many Pigs up there too! He was a force of nature, nothing ever got in his way, until the ‘Big C’ got him, & Parkinsons too, shame to see such a strong bloke taken down like that . Bit of mystery the ‘Fire’, I will call round your yard for a cupa-rosey & tell you! Take care mate, Chris
