I do not have any pictures of Leyland Marathons but we had one at “SYKES” and the lad who drove it is Steve Cook a member on here I think it had a ■■■■■■■ 250 and fuler range change box I did an odd local load with it but it was not a patch on the Crusaders in every aspect in my opinion but I am bias as I thought it was a very stupid thing to bring the Marathon out when the crusader was barely 2 years old from the same parent company and they would have been far more sense in getting one correct before launching another model in the same class as they could have done what they did with the ergo Beaver and Mandator just badge engineering and different engines but I guess that would have been to difficult for them to think about as it had been done before. There is quite a few pictures on bubblemans thread as well.
cheers Johnnie

That’s right Johnnie - I had it for a short while, although it was more comfortable than the Crusader it didn’t have the power and rattled like the tin box it was!

What was the reason behind offering the ■■■■■■■ and Rolls Royce options were they better engines than the TL12?

A few shots of marathons blending into the fleet

Hi Guys
Here is a pic of the Marathon2 that I used to drive when I was on for Chilton.
Loaded Jotun Paint, Brighton

Some of you will have already seen this photo and slagged it off for the "Blacksmith trailer and raggedy old sheets!! but it was all we could afford in the East-Endduring the Eighties !!
GS

We’ll all be back to “blacksmith trailers & raggedy sheets” if this place does’nt buck up, at least you could fix a Marathon unlike all the fandangled ■■■■■ we have put up with now GS.

Looks like a Harold Woods trailer behind the mangled Marathon

It is a Harold Woods trailer, their logo is on the back and you can just see the name on the side.
I wonder if the house was sold eventually?

Woods had some local drivers based at UCC/BSC Chemicals at Orgreave,Sheffield in the 60s and 70s.They all had AEC Mk5 Mammoth Majors.LPG took the work in the early 70s,and some transferred to LPG.A.E.Evans bought one or two ex Harold AECs.

I heard a tale that Harold Woods ordered 100 new mkv mammoth majors and when the first were delivered they were a dead loss so he cancelled the order ,AEC made him a director to keep the business ,dont know if its true

Here are a few pics of some Leyland Marathons.
I’ve included a few pics of my Dads truck, what a flying machine, used to scare the bejesus out of me when the fresh air intake pipe used to blow off in the passenger footwell when you were hammering down the motorway!!

I always thought they were a better looking motor than anything else being produced in england at the time ,if they would have got rid of the “L” word off the front and replaced it with a blue triangle and few more quid for research i think it would have been a great motor… oh and with a TL12 as the only option

drove both when i was a young lad and and thought i was the business
marathon was a great motor for its time but when the marathon 2 with the 290 came out well it tanked the 240 gardner

And one from over the water

Hello everyone,
sorry for my language, I’m French, I can ask you if you can help me:

I have a Leyland Marathon 2, 1981, TL12 engine 280HP,
and a Daf400, there are my two trucks:

Problem with Marathon 2 => there 's a water leak behind the pulley on the fan motor (slight oozing from 2 / 3 years, but then there is 15 liters in 15 jrs while being locked!)

I guess it’s the water pump ?
not yet removed, but hard to find parts (old truck), you would have an idea ?

Thank you in advance for information

Try the AEC Society someone on there will definitely know as the Marathon is basically an AEC anyway the TL12 is the turbocharged AV760 AEC engine

What was the reason behind offering the ■■■■■■■ and Rolls Royce options were they better engines than the TL12?

It was to provide options for former Guy Big J operators. Leyland was aiming to phase out Guy production and hoped to persuade Guy users to buy Marathons with propritery engines. The optional engines policy caused a host of problems in the Leyland Group spares and servicing departments who had to have a much bigger parts inventory on the shelves, and the resulting stockholding costs contributed in a small way to the moubting financial crisis at Leyland in the '70s.

What is the best insole and water system for running a marathon? Currently training for a marathon. I ran a half marathon last year, and feel like I could have performed better if my feet didn’t hurt around mile 8. When I checked my feet after the half marathon, skin was rubbed off around the ball of the foot, etc. Any suggestions to take care of the rubbing as well?
