this was my first truck after i had just passed my class1. only had it for 6months. loved it. if you could stand the vibration, it would do 80. mark2, on a w. with a 290■■■■■■■ in it. always remember how useless the wipers where! but how comfy the bed was.
Didn’t K & P Iddons run quite a few Marathons til quite late in their life.

Yes Iddons did run just the one and what a pig that was. I was a fitter there in them days when they ran that one but back axles where such a pain. Best bit was the gear box and engine lol
I used to love my old Marathon on TNT, it would only do about 100kph flat out but you never had to keep watching the mirrors at that speed & it had a fairly good heater so I was laughing. No doubt long since scrapped but it was reg XWH 811V. Day cab 4x2 with a 265 rolls in it. I’ve only got one really bad picture of it.
TNT had loads fo Marathons, day cab versions, with the exception of minor defects e.g drivers window falling into the door, and slight steering wander due to the small steering wheel, they were a good motor.Try catching one.
Stanfield:
Never mind catching one,you had a job stopping one with them brakes.
You took the words out of my mouth John.Until mine was modified I used to treat it with the utmost respect brakewise
Hiya Chris how’s tha’ keepin’ on’th t’island? The Marathon was a Leyland “too far” for us at Bewick Transport! even turned down umteen Demo’s!!! As far as I could see at the time they were the biggest Bags of Se ever built and I’m glad to say we steered well clear!!! I once told a Leyland salesman who came into our depot with one to “Get back up in the cab and rev up and Foxtrot Oscar out of it”!!Couldn’t be bothered to listen to his B***s!! Cheers Dennis.

Well in defence of the Marathon Dennis I have to say that once the brakes were sorted mine was a good motor. With the TL12 and Fuller RTO9509 box she earned me some cash.I agree that some were a load of trouble so I must have been lucky.
Of course when you were used to AEC MK3s,MK5s and then Mandators,a lift up into a new Marathon was something different - speed and pulling wise so “I were rayt grateful tha knows”. Don’t look a gift hoss in t’mouth as they say.
I’ve sent thi some more rain over Dennis, fill those reservoirs up a bit !
