John Irving (Mealsgate) Ltd, Cumbria

How’s about this for a suggestion young Master Gill, why not become a “franchisee” for fast eddie ?,Surely if the Chuckle brothers know that you are a bone fide, dyed in the wool, rabid eddie spotter they would at least give you an “even money” chance of survival before you got screwed !! Then with a bit of luck, like the “Trojan Horse” senario you could have been beavering away on the inside and by the time you were sussed it would be too late, you could then boot the Chuckles out and take over the whole “smoke and mirrors eddifice”.Only an idea “CG” but stranger things have happened over the years !! Pip! pip! Bewick.

Good idea…

However let me tell both Bewick and Thomas Matthew Gill (is it Thomas or Matthew?) no one will ever repeat what Edward Stobart has done for the UK haulage industry.

Hello georgeking
Its Thomas marra (Matthews the middle name). Your right about Edward Stobart. He is truely a haulage legend
I could become a Stobart subbie  Plenty of work and good pay not bad idea at all Bewick! Thankyou marra

First off “CG” you’ve got a slapping coming when I catch you for defacing a Bewick photo !!Secondly,in the extremely unlikely possibility that you could ever tempt me to re-enter the Haulage business alongside yourself, ( and if I had any say whatsoever)the last outfit I would become involved with is “the fast eddie” group, years and years ago there were firms that survived as 100% sub-contractors,but those days are long gone and the only reason the big outfits sub their traffic now is because they can’t do that particular traffic themselves and turn a profit,so they use “Mug” subby’s.I can tell you that when I started with one motor I vowed to only work for customers directly,OK I did operate as a subby at the start to get back to my prime sources of traffic, but within a year I had developed direct customers at the southern end of my operation. We maintained those principals at Bewick Transport throughout the many years that followed, only operating as “subbys” when it suited our operation to do so,and then only in a small way.So it would seem to me “CG” that you are going to be on a hiding to nothing from the “off”(well the second hiding, your going to get the first one off me !!!) Oh!,I don’t mind giving a bit of advice,I know where can get yourself a Top Fleet Engineer, his name is “Carryfast”,give him a PM,I’ll bet he’ll jump at the job,and don’t worry about interviewing him,he’ll interview you when you meet him,but what he dosen’t know about Motors could be written on the back of a stamp !! So sorry not to take up your generous offer I’m enjoying retirement too much ! Bewick.

Errr…does that mean I have to buy myself a new pair of wellies ? And a hard hat ? Whatever next ■■
I utterly refuse to wear one of those hi-viz waistcoats , as livestock are not colourblind, and can become unsettled
by the sight of them. Do you still have a yard dog I can train , please ?
Oh dear , Dennis ,…I`ll be up to my elbows in the " brown stuff " working with Mr. Gill !

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hello Bewick & CWM
Thankyou for your post.
Bewick, I’m sorry that I’ve defaced a Bewick International Scania 113M lorry photo. I was only having a laugh at the suggestion that georgeking made that you and me shoudl go into haulage. I’ll remove the photo from TNUK for you

Cattle wagon man, I still have a lot of respect for Bewick and this isn’t a ‘little game’ as you put it.
I not play games on people. I’ve had too many played on me in my life so far.

I’m sorry if anyone if offended by the photo. I will remove it for Mr Smith.
Kindest regards

Hello everyone
Thankyou to georgeking, Bewick and stevedaff for there posts.
georgeking, Yes, I’m sure there was something in the paper that John Irving had died.
Thankyou also georgeking for your interesting post on the history of H & ME Fearon and your comments about my self. I am looking seriously at going into haulage and running my own business and you never know, I might become the next Eddie Stobart of ■■■■■■■■

Well “CG” I think I might just have the ideal motor for a keen young fella like you to get started in " Delivering Sustainable Logistic Solutions" it’s only had one previous careful lady owner driver from new,and I’ll tell you what,I’ll even throw a repaint and re-lettering in with the price as you don’t want to be seen dead at the wheel of a motor bearing the Fleet colours of a “no mark” haulage contractor of yesteryear do you marra !!How will you be paying,Cash,HP,Lease or Contract Hire ? Pip Pip,Bewick.

Could you take a (delivery) Dennis, just to keep C.G.on the move

georgeking:
My advice to anyone toaday us not to enter the haulage industry unless it is by the back door like Andre Tinkler did.

If you want to do so then yes have a mentor who will help you and give you guidance. Also look at successful business models probably the most successful business model in our area is John MIller of Dumfries in my professional opinion Neckar a brilliant business model, he started off in the office of Curries of Dumfries and learned all about the haulage industry. He then started off with one timber lorry but here is the brilliant part he then brought on board a business partner who had a finance background, together they built up a fleet of about 140 lorries, and he then sold out at the right time to Securicor for £5m. after a while he started another haulage business.

John Irving had a useless business model it was based on the one H & ME Fearon used in the 70’s OK then but not effective now!

I fully accept that you have an “in built criticism” of all things H.& M. E. & J.I.,but nothing was ever as it appeared, and of course,it’s easy looking back with 20/20 vision.Yes,it’s easy to pick out the outstanding success stories as you are adept at doing “george”,after the “success” has been achieved but as a typical accountant you are probably not able to predict, with 100% certainty, what direction a fledgling operation should take, other than to advise against “any direction”,as per a number of practising accountants I was involved with over the years !!The other major piece in the jigsaw is being in the right place at the right time ! Success within the haulage business years ago,IMO,was a combination of the aforementioned, hands on management, driver and vehicle choice, decent customers and cashflow and adhereing to the legislation. However,if the traffic dried up for no fault of the haulier it wasn’t always easy to “go round the corner” and start again, well not in areas such as W. ■■■■■■■ or indeed any sparsley industrialised area.Just my opinion to counter the 20/20 visionaries, and I believe I can speak from years of experience albeit from nearly 20 years ago and no doubt there will be conflicting opinion,so what, let the argument will continue !! Cheers Bewick.
