Drivers don’t have a career or a trade and there not known as professional people what you have is people who make a living from driving and the select few who have a clue would have had a career before they came into this game, the ones with the high IQ, the rest of us just breeze through life some with good jobs and some with bad.

Indeed, and a good driver can beat the auto (Volvo excepted, its bloody near perfectly matched to the engines) on fuel economy and maintaining progress whether driving a manual gearbox or by driving an auto in manual mode.
That doesn’t mean to say every driver can do this, and it must be said that the typical auto is good at protecting the lorry and itself from the worse of the idiots out there, thats where the dumbing down bit comes in.
Some need autos simply because they are not lorry drivers and never will be, but the auto does allow these non drivers to take a lorry from a to b in a fashion, i wish it wasn’t so but thats where we are at.

Point still stands though. The increase of auto boxes is not to do with unintelligent drivers and more the advantages it provides in an ideal world. Crap boxes is not the fault of the drivers intelligence but more the truck manufacturers.

I think I can see the point youre making, but . . . manufacturers are offering, and I would suggest, pushing autos. By selling autos they can offer full R & M even if an operator employs a muppet. So why would an employer pay extra to get an intelligent, involved and conscientious driver? A muppet will now be less likely to break a truck now. As Juddian and others have said its a symptom of the “race to the bottom”. Seems to me that those of us who want to get involved in our work, read the road, (rather than our facebook updates), choose a gear for the road ahead (not the road 10metres behind us) and do a days work are being sidelined.

Its got hee haw to do with a lack of intelligence of drivers or that they cant work out how to use a manual so it needs to be “dumbed down” for them. The advantages of an auto far outweigh the advantage of a manual.

I dont know about that. Theres approx 2,000,000 people doing C&G training at the moment. I’m pretty sure they could find someone to replace you fairly quickly
