We all know you do not need high IQ to become a lorry driver but what do you reckon the average lorry drivers IQ is?
In my view it is probably lower than average especially with the antics of some on the roads. Obviously all lorry drivers are not thick but as we see on this forum there tends to be more thick ones than bright ones.
And before you have a go at me I have driven lorries for many years but have a few more strings to my bow.
Also in my view standards have dropped in recent years or is that not the case?
I disagree. It may have been true at one stage, when anyone 21 years old could drive a heavy vehicle. However since the introduction of HGV tests and the associated controls that go with truck driving nowadays, whilst I wouldn’t pretend that truck drivers are more intelligent than most, they are at least on a par with others. I can’t see how IQ has much to do with the standard of driving nowadays, I think that is more to do with attitude than intelligence. I did note however that you were very keen to point out that the claim did not apply to you.

I have read quite a lot of intelligent debate on this forum so I for one wont denegrate lorry drivers.Some drivers have done more demanding jobs that no longer exist and some people like being drivers.I.Q. doesnt have that much to do with it.
Id say the average IQ is on par with managers. Some of the daftest people Ive ever encountered have been managers and some of the smartest people Ive ever encountered have been lorry drivers.
Yet another negative thread which with a broad brush will make us all out to be knuckle dragging neanderthals. Have a bit of pride in what you are and what you do ffs.
daft question,ranging from nill to mega…what has disappeared over the years is hands on initiative that has taken the job description from being a good proper all round driver and all that should go with the job title, to now being in a employment situation where you get paid from the neck down to be a steering wheel attendant.only do as instructed as per the risk assessment,never think for yourselfif in doubt call in for instructions etc,hence just become a cabbage wearing a hi viz.thats the sad thing about the way it is now…no initiative…satnavs are great,but you should be able to head somewhere and find it after looking at a map if you have to.or at least get to the doorstep without having to be led in from starting point.

“Other strings to my bow” is the drivers equivalent of “I’m not racist! I even know some black people!”
I’d say 90% plus drivers have other skills or means of making money, or as you say, “other strings” so it makes me smirk when someone feels the need to distance themselves by stating it, almost as though they feel a sense of superiority. Maybe that’s justified. Often it’s not.

I said if you have any degree of intelligence it is not hard to pass a test.
If your not so bright it may not be so easy.

You didn’t ask a perfectly legitimate question… you posed a hypothesis in a wholly biased manner using inflammatory language.
Anyhow, the measure of ‘thickness’ is entirely subjective in your ‘question’. Certainly in the way you have phrased it anyhow. Are we to assume by ‘thick’ you mean just generally bereft of common sense; lacking in educational qualifications; lacking comprehension…?
