Having just done our Lancs-Yorks-■■■■■■■ run, loaded to the back doors with mostly handball, I decided to try sticking to all the speed limits whereas it’s a “flat-out” run for everyone else, I’m all done and nearly home. I just used the sack truck (some customers looked at me strange when I pulled tables, counters etc apart) instead of carrying. Definitely a case of work smarter, not faster.
I used to do a night trunk run from ackworth to Berwick upon tweed and back 5 nights a week, it was job and finish, well after so long you get a feel for things coppers, traffic light timing in Newcastle getting a good run at a hill etc etc , so you could give it some welly some nights and get away with it, well one night I fell out with the transport manager about getting the wagon back for another job, so I stuck to every speed limit there was ie 30mph in town 40mph on most of a1 north of Newcastle, you no what I mean ,well I couldn’t believe it , the journey only took me an extra 15 mins, so all that charging about to gain 30 mins on a 320 mile round trip but having said that we all still speed don’t we, mind you it was back in the 80s
Tend to sit at 63km/ph on SC and at 79km/ph on dual carriageway. Paid by hour so no rush = no stress. UNLIKE another driver at our depot who has received speeding ticket for 56mph on A14 at Stowmarket Oops!
An Iveco was with me all the way on a SC last night. I was doing between 53 and 57 mph for miles and miles. Eventually lost him/her up a long steep bypass.

Do you not feel guilty holding up other drivers who would like to travel at a legal 40mph?
Personally on long open stretches (different if a built up area) i tend to sit on around 69kph. (42.87) which is unlikely to be a true 42.87 and carries a very small risk of getting nabbed.

put TIR plates up and do 70km/ 80/ and 90 clicks eye speeekkkkeeeee d no ingleeeesssshhhh
40 mph every time , its a maximum speed NOT a minimum. If anyone tries to push from behind I just go slower ! and btw as I understand it the 10% discretion doesn’t apply to hgv’s because they have their odometers calibrated every 2 years

No I do not feel guilty at driving at 39.375mph if 0.625mph makes that much difference to your run then ai would suggest you are poorly planned
Possibly the same reason people go through speed cameras at 25mph. People don’t seem to understand mathematics and physics. Even if a camera does flash you, the speed/distance/time equation has to be used and will show your correct speed. So many people are paranoid nowadays. It’s become silly.
It’s the law of the land
speed kills
I’m paid by the hour
My speeding fines are paid by me and not my employer
Speeding fines are not a tax deductible expense
Shorter journey times will reduce the demand for my and my comrades services
I take pride in being as good a driver as I can be
I allow a small safety margin to allow for speed-creep as I am not constantly watching the speedo

While returning from Cairnryan last Thursday at around 18.15 I was tootleing along at 45mph on the A75. I normally do around 40 to 45 on single roads anyway as it’s the law & the only time I got caught was Scotland on the A7.
I was well into the side to let other traffic pass & if you know the road there are plenty of straight bits to overtake. There was a few of our Irish friends behind me & most passed me at around 50mph ( their license) but one driver passed me going flat out & gave me a blast on his horn. I feel I was right to do the speed I was doing as Scottish Police are known for catching speeders on Single carriageways. Further along drivers coming torwards me were flashing so I slowed to 40mph & in a layby the Police had pulled a van driver, whether for speeding or not I don’t know?

I’m normally a very placid and accepting driver, I’ve driven in 15 different countries all around the world, was a Driving Instructor (part time) for almost 25 years and held a RoSPA Gold for almost 10 years, but when driving a truck, following another truck on a long length of 40mph limit on a clear dry day with nothing in front of them, and they persistently do less than 40, it does annoy me.
