How fast do you go on single carriageways?

While returning from Cairnryan last Thursday at around 18.15 I was tootleing along at 45mph on the A75. I normally do around 40 to 45 on single roads anyway as it’s the law & the only time I got caught was Scotland on the A7.

I was well into the side to let other traffic pass & if you know the road there are plenty of straight bits to overtake. There was a few of our Irish friends behind me & most passed me at around 50mph ( their license) but one driver passed me going flat out & gave me a blast on his horn. I feel I was right to do the speed I was doing as Scottish Police are known for catching speeders on Single carriageways. Further along drivers coming torwards me were flashing so I slowed to 40mph & in a layby the Police had pulled a van driver, whether for speeding or not I don’t know? :unamused:

41 max for me, yes call me Mr Sensible but sticks and stones etc etc.

On singles I do generally stick to the limit.

40 for me its my licence and I’m paid by the hour

Usually potter along at 45 ish.
If (ime in a hurry speed up you frecer) is right up my harris ,i tend to back it off to 40.
Why do drivers think that if they sit close, the driver in front will speed up?

You saved me posting it

Normally do around 40-45. Was going down the A5 the other night doing around 40 and there a Volvo cattle wagon behind me hanging right out on the other side of the road trying to get me to speed up. No chance, can wait there all you want. He overtook me further down the road.

in the day 70k

Yep 70-75k. I think the scway speed limit should be around these speeds.

In this day and age, companies will pay a lot of attention to driving styles/economy etc. by utilising tracker information.

As an agency driver, I would not want to be banned from a site for speeding, it is so easy to pick up - some trackers do actually highlight speeding too! Also if you were involved in a fatal accident - irrespective of blame, your speed would be examined very closely by the plod and your tacho records speed every second the vehicle is moving.

Since we are posting KM’s - my CC would be set to 64km/h on a single.

  1. Try my best anyway. If it rolls a little fast on the hills try to catch it. Not really fussed on that old school stuff about momentum and speeding up for hills. Plenty of gears and power.

44mph.

Just curious, why do you do 44 not 45?

It all depends on the road. There’s a lot of S/C roads in our area which are safe enough to do 50 on as they’re very wide with a wide painted ghost island. Others are narrower with trees either side and less places to escape if something goes wrong.
I tend to go at a speed that’s sensible for the road without sitting on the limiter and not so slow as to cause annoyance to cars behind me.

42 or so. Limiter (I don’t use CC on single carriageway roads) is usually set to 67/68 km/h. I pull in fairly frequently to let people past, if I can.

Depends on the circumstances. Usually around 40, but on stretches of roads like this:

I usually set the cruise at 50 like a badass.
