In the 70s J. Haydons of Biddulph, North Staffs used to go down to abbatoirs in Chard and Totnes (although thatās Devon I think) Totnes was with pigs as I recall. Are they still going does anyone know?
Twas a long old spin from Chelford market to Chard and back in 1975. Did it in a brand new Mercedez Benz 2419 6-wheeler (no photos Iām afraid) and on the way home, we stopped in for egg & chips on the Motorway and driver Arthur Unwin put Ā£7 of diesel in to get us home. That would be about 30 miles today!
thereās Snellās at Chard, just a small place - does a lot of home kill afaik
not sure about Totnes !
Hi chaps
Gardner120 i canāt say for sure but i think the abbatoir at totnes may have been danish bacon, i remember either a processing plant or an abbatoir as you enter totnes town centre, thereās a supermarket built on that site now. hopefully if im wrong could some please correct me.
The Thames if itās a 4D here looks just like the one we had second hand bought through Coventry & Jeffs in Bristol back in about 63. All Iāve got is a photo showing the tailboard of it in the background.
Iām still turning the attic upside down trying to find my old photos but no joy so far.
Lovely job Neil, Thanks for posting them. I wish someone could come up with an A.F.Cook lorry. I used to have photos of them here but canāt find them.
That Thames 4D is dentical to the one we had second hand on the farm, my father bought it seond hand from Coventry & Jeffs in Bristol. The cab on it was Green.

John Watts had green lorryās, was based in Landkey , near Barnstaple ( closed down 6-7 years ago )
Used to see this truck in Germany quite often and a couple of times down in La Jonquera waiting for vet clearence whiuch could take a long time good job the truck had a water and feeding sysytem fitted. Remember talking to the driver who said he was from Somerset. can remember him stuck at a Peage in France when the french farmers were banning english lambs but he was taking pigs down to Barcelona and the farmers had shredded two of his tyres with chain saws and had him blocked in with tractors, but i saw him later on that day parked up down near Limoges and he said never again but seemed happy enough to be parked up anyway.
Sheep fairs in somersetā¦I can remember the sheep fairs up at Raleighs cross, was always very busy and buyers came from everywhere as i once had a load to go perth and backloaded from stirling mkt for North Devon Meat so all in all was a good trip and good paying from what i can remember.

Hi toplineruk,
Did you travel to the auction marts in the north of England, and was it for sheep or cattle, or both?
Maybe our paths have crossed if I knew who you drove for.
Cheers, cattle wagon man.
