I passed in a diesel driving school car (was told that examiners are more likely to fail people doing the test in their own cars…)
I have not driven a diesel car since…
Have not driven a petrol HGV since neither, but the driving school I attended had a messerschmit engine in a truck there for some souped-up effort for a upcoming truckfest at the time, if memory serves…
Passed in a micra,first motor,was an ■■■■■■ van.
Passed in a Mini 850.
Next car was a Healey Sprite (like a MG Midget) complete with soft top and wire wheels and a flying machine in comparison.
The bloody thing cost me something like 10 weeks wages to insure it at 17/18.
I kid you not,.I was on an apprentice wage of 13 quid a week,.and it cost me 130 to insure which I borrowed off ny Granda …(and managed to pay it back eventually btw on Granda’s (very) easy terms.
I think the hidden message from the ins co was that they did not want to insure me on it, so price me out.
Economics was not my strong point in those days. …but it was a babe magnet so it had it’s compensations.
Learned in a Diesel Transit over several weeks where i worked, passed test in a Mini, first car was a rusty Volvo 122S which cost me £60, insurance wasn’t that bad in the early 70’s for new drivers.
First taught to drive aged around 8 by my big sis in a Wolseley 1500 on a private road.
Having never actually driven before, I had three lessons (all I could afford - 99 pence an hour was a lot back then) in a VW Beetle, but when I turned up for the test on that damp, foggy, frosty November morning in 1972, there was no sign of the VW. A young girl pupil had burned the clutch out the night before, so the instructor had brought his own Austin 1300 for me, with just enough time to have a few minutes practice. Somehow, despite the longest emergency stop ever down a slippery 1 in 10 cobbled hill, I passed first time. I wanted something unusual for my first car - no rusty Anglias for this lad - and I found a 1958 Borgward Isabella Combi which fitted the bill just fine. A useful 1500cc estate car in good condition with everything working, full MOT and half a tank of petrol, on the road for £80 and £25 third party and theft insurance courtesy of the Co-op. It served me well for a couple of years before selling it on, and would be a very rare and desirable car today, worth a lot more than my original £80.
Passed in an Austin A40 & bought a Mini,I wish I had it now! a 1959 push button start on the floor, Worth a bob or two now.
commonrail mentioned the Nissan Micra , i had a Y reg for six years, brilliant little car, economical, no fancy computer gizmos, reliable and a pleasure to drive and parking it was easy as it was so small.
I regularly see older Micras floating around still going on and on.
Passed in F reg Nova then got home phone insurance company to change insurance and went to work in a Vreg Chavette salon all within 3 hour in May 1993

There’s a racing comp based on Micras
I will check that out.
I passed in my instructors Ford Fiesta, 1st car was an MG metro.
Passed my first test at age 21 in a 7.5 tonner with National Carriers
Drove 7.5 for work but cycled to and from work
At age 24 I drove my first car and it felt like a dinky toy
I was a night yard shunter at age 18/19 reversing artics etc
Same car, Fiesta Mk4 diesel. My step dad taught me in it so just booked a test with it. Can you still do that now use your own car? Don’t tend to notice any learners not in driving school cars anymore?
Was a great car, I’d happily have one back.

Yes but it must meet the test requirements for the examiner
Did my test in the military in a Japanese car that belonged to one of the civvies that the military contracted the car training to. Passed my car test on a Friday, my motorcycle test the following Friday, my class 3 the Friday after, and finally my class 1 the Friday after that.
Bought my first car later that year (I was aged 17) when posted to Germany, it was a LHD Ford ■■■■■■ Mexico. Wish I still had that now, they’re worth a fortune.
I bet Carryfast aka Geoffrey passed in a British Leyland Austin Allegro Vanden Plas luxury edition with the square steering wheel and fake leather seats.
…it would have to be a beige one…
You are right , it should have been the beige one.
