Yorkshire Livestock Haulage Companies

I’m sure there will be more of Woodheads, Plowman, Greenwoods and Waits once I start having a proper look!

The ones of Waite’s Magnum on the move were taken by my mate standing up and poking his head out of the sunroof of my Nova on the A1079 - I remember the day vividly! It must’ve been 1992 or 93 cos I’d only just passed my test and got the car, and the truck was brand new

Grasbys 750

Spot on that. They’re getting to have a decent fleet these days

Tommy Staveley bought this Albion Super Clydesdale 16 tonner new in 1966.
DEC 281 D was an early Ergomatic-cabbed Albion , and it replaced a 1960 ( L.A.D. cabbed ) Leyland Comet. Fitted with a 24. 00" , 3 deck livestock body made by Fox of Lancaster, this Albion was kept busy
transporting stock throughout the north of England. Son, Eric , on reaching 21 years of age started driving DEC` , before it was replaced by a Leyland Super Comet in 1969.

Dalesman , a contributor on here , will remember driving this Albion , when he drove for Tommy.

Special thanks to Eric , who kindly allowed me to show this , and other photographs on here.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Hi Malcolm,
Very happy to oblige to include photographs , etc., onto A 65 thread. . Tommy couldn`t be much nearer the A 65 without having his toes squashed by passing traffic. :unamused:

Yan,Tyan, metherer, netherer, toodle, pip etc etc, thats how they counted the Herdwicks and Swaledales at Troutbeck (■■■■■■■■■■■ sheep sale Roy !!

Tommy and Eric Staveley replaced the Albion with this Leyland Super Comet , reg. no. GJM 795 G, in 1969 .
In 1973, a decision was made to buy a new Williams 250" , 3 deck container to replace the Fox of Lancaster body. With now smooth-sided side panels , this was much easier to clean compared to the ribbed panels of before. The overall interior width was increased , and the additionalluton` section meant more sheep could be carried.

The ( now faded ) photograph was taken by me one evening in 1974 , as it was leaving Sedbergh Auction Mart ,
fully loaded with fat sheep.

Hi Dennis,
I could not count the illegals using the " ■■■■■■■■■■ Twang " in case some of the unwanted-here
mis-interpreted it as if if I were talking to them !!

You`ve brought back memories of the (windswept) yard at Troutbeck Auction Mart. Thanks !

I still see this Volvo coming through Selby quite a bit. Anyone remember the original ‘Moo Mover’ when it was a Bedford TK ? I was a youngster back then and we lived in Gomersal. Would love to see a picture of the original ‘Moo Mover’.

Hi Cattle Wagon Man
I remember well driving Dec 281 D. On the first day out when new, I went to the gimmer lamb sale at Hawes. Loaded all three decks with lambs, and couldn’t move, the weight had pulled the parking brake so tight it wouldn’t release. A bracket on the chassis suporting the brake rod was holding it tight, so we cut the bracket off and it was OK after that.
It had a low geared rear axle, it’s top speed was about 45 mph, it took a long time to get to Exeter. You were right Roy about the ribbed pannelling it was difficult to clean out. Talking about cleaning out, in the very hard winter of 1963 when we had the Leyland Comet it never got cleaned out properly for about two months, as the muck froze on, and all water was frozen up. I have photo of the Albion with Tommy & Rex the dog, he was a good dog as soon as the back door was open he dived in and brought the sheep out.
Regards Dalesman

Hi Dalesman,
Its always good to read your interesting postings on the Y.L.H.C. thread. If you have any photographs of Tommy & Erics wagons , then theyd be most welcome on here. Eric said hed have a look at home for some more photos for me to show on the thread.
You mention the L.A.D.- cabbed Leyland Comet. Hey,…I must be getting old because I can remember that
the reg, no. started GEC *** , and a deep cattle body luton almost engulfed the cab.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

saw these on Facebook this morning
