A little later, but there were also Mathews of Ossett who had Naylors running for them with Lard and Margarine.

Jacksons of Ossett, the owner was sent to prison when the young tank wash lad, completely untrained, was told to wash out a Phenol tanker.Opened the footvalve and back valve without venting, was splashed with product, dead in 30 minutes.Probably the first H&S imprisonment in Britain.
Remember one of Fearns coming in to our wash(BRT Cardiff) for a trailer repair. They owed us money, the trailer was dropped in workshops, the boss bought the driver breakfast then rang Fearns for the money, holding the tank as ransom!!!M/cycle courier arrived 4 hours later.No-one msesed with Tony Rosser!!!

naylors sold the transport side about 8-10 years ago & has now got a small industrial estate were he rents the units out.The estate is built on coopers old yard at shafton.

The second pic taken at northumbian metal industies which a relation of mine used to work there building alloy bodies.it also belonged to R Hanson & son.+ when my father was in the scrap game he used to get all the trucks + trailers that came into their that were written off.

i am trying to post another pic. am sure that the body was made there. dad says he remembers the first 8 wheeler commnig in the yard, and they were all sayin who would have it, then it went. a few weeks later my dad went and picked it up from northumbian metals and had it for some years. he never took a pic. shame realy. all try addin some more.

the second pic shows some different bodys. were they made at northumbian metals? the atki is the best truck on this pic. it had the passenger seat out of one of the fodens for the drivers bad back.

Looking at the M.J Snow eight wheeler reminds me of another firm from Old Denaby, A Lee ran steel out of Rotherham. They had a lot of Albion lorries,

hi all does anybody remember d sharp and son from barnsley my dad used to drive for them in the 80s

sharpys, now them lads did’nt run by the rules,i remember when they got a new fleet of sed-atki 400 s & the dafs,i think they would’ve been the 2800s smart looking fleet in the 70s-80s.

Yeh, Sharpes were known as ‘bandits’ London and back home everyday loaded both ways no problems, it was very rare for one of their drivers to have a night out, they took their meal breaks whilst the traffic lights were red, hard workers those Barnsley lads though. Also they carried on working through the Road Transport strike 79/80 ish.

I drove for CMT transport (Charlie and Margaret Tomlinson) in Wakefield, very professional set up, we used to work out of the container base in Leeds and Rockware Glass at Knottingley, also Britvic at Lovell Park, Leeds.

Any one remember Flintoffs, Osset based I think.

I remember Duncan Sharps from Barnsley and also Flintoffs who ran in a green livery IIRC.Another one from Ossett was Fred ------ from Owl Lane, ran tankers but I can’t remember his surname.
Sammyopisite mentioned Chambler and Illingworth from Thurgoland, just below Thorpes yard, they used to put the hours in as well  .

yep i remeber old jack flintoff and his lad andrew, cmt = millfield at horbury bridge,

The mechanic:
I’ve been trying to remember an other company in the Ackworth group and it came to me today. It was Thomas Hoptons. They were members of the
Transport Association and used to fuel up at the Caledonian Depot at Abington where Iworked after leaving school in 1966.

Tommy Hoptons yard was just over the river bridge in Castleford heading north up “Mary Panel” It’s now a Shell garage, taken over in 1963 and moved to willowbridge lane, Whitwood and re-Branded Onward Transport as all “saterlite” depots were (Livingstone, Birtley, Stockport, Purfleet etc) except for some reason Sheffield which although taking the two tone green livery kept the name Wheeler Road. - [and of course the Ackworth depot which were branded Ackworth Transport]
The depot is still owned by the Onward group but operated by another company.

Thanks, just south of Doncaster Edlington way.

the original onward garage or depot at ackworth became a garage for richard lawson autologistics.it was closed down some 6 months before the company went under in 2005.used to park there many a night, and had a wander down the boot and shoe for quiz night.a bus company did move into the garage after lawsons, but im sure its been sold for housing devolpment. :frowning:
