I remember Bayfords Harry when I worked for A.E.Evans.They did a lot out of Immingham Storage in the past back to the Leeds area.

The mechanic:
Does anyone remember Readfearns Glass from Barnsley. They used to stay at my mother in laws digs just north of Abington.

i used to live just up the road from redfearns glass in the 70s-90s & if you walked round the outskirts of the factory im sure it was about 3 miles.

sharpys, now them lads did’nt run by the rules,i remember when they got a new fleet of sed-atki 400 s & the dafs,i think they would’ve been the 2800s smart looking fleet in the 70s-80s.

Hi Harry, I dont know where Bayfords are now based, but they’re definately still going, as one of their tankers was delivering diesel to our depot in Yeadon this afternoon.

I’ve been trying to remember an other company in the Ackworth group and it came to me today. It was Thomas Hoptons. They were members of the
Transport Association and used to fuel up at the Caledonian Depot at Abington where Iworked after leaving school in 1966.

I remember Redfearn National Glass from years ago, back into the 70s.I’m not sure if they ran their own transport originally but in the early 80s BRS ran the job with Scania 111s. They ran tankers on nights from - was it Monk Bretton,Barnsley - over Woodhead to collect silica sand I suppose from Cheshire.I was on for MFS at the time on regular nights and they used to come past me empty, cab “leet” on and a quick wave and gone. They had a dark blue livery and a Redfearn logo on the cab. The glass works was huge like you say.
Anybody got a photo of them?

i am trying to post another pic. am sure that the body was made there. dad says he remembers the first 8 wheeler commnig in the yard, and they were all sayin who would have it, then it went. a few weeks later my dad went and picked it up from northumbian metals and had it for some years. he never took a pic. shame realy. all try addin some more.

the second pic shows some different bodys. were they made at northumbian metals? the atki is the best truck on this pic. it had the passenger seat out of one of the fodens for the drivers bad back.

Peppers in Leeds had some tippers just like that Bedford, they were owned by Hargreaves back in the 60’s. I was an apprentice fitter then and it was fun (for me anyway) when we went out on a breakdown, usualy a half-shaft broken.
Great photos, thanks to all who posted them.

hi their hartley, cutts are still on the go the do a lot of tanker work taking sand to glass factories.

Nice photo of the Fearns Borderer, their depot was at Dodworth. They did a lot of work for Staveley Chemicals and Hickson and Welch Castleford and I knew some of their drivers in the 70s,can’t remember their names though. Nice to hear J Cutts is still going on the sand job.I remember Sharps,Tom Roberts and who was it worked for the Barnsley Canister Co.? Colin Vaines was at “The Walk” Birdwell and there was somebody from Platts Common whose name escapes me,somebody will know. Plenty more from that part of Yorks, just recalling the names is the problem  .

Yes J.Cutt are still going i was owner driver for them for 3years until recently when the work dried up a proper firm

Chris. Rockware glass in Doncaster was off wheatley hall road, but is now called Ardagh Glass. Norbert / Salvesens are the main contractor with Malcolms and a couple of others doing the transport distribution. There is also the glass works in Knottingley which could have been Redfearns originally.

Fearns of Dodworth were in Hickson and Welsh and in Lambsons. They were probably morphed into DHL

A little later, but there were also Mathews of Ossett who had Naylors running for them with Lard and Margarine.
