Punchy Dan:
I know this as when Hargreaves took over peppers from clowne uncle wilf was a major contractor and was offered director ship at Hargreaves but didn’t want it .
I went to work at Peppers in Leeds when i left school in 1963 as an apprentice fitter. We lived at Bowcliffe Hall as my dad was the gardner/ grounds keeper there, we lived in Bowcliffe cottage. Peppers were painted a dark blue and had S type Bedfords and Albions and Leyland if i remmember, these were being replaced with Albions with the new LAD cab and painted grey and red with a white roof. They had a sign writer come in and put the name on in gold leaf, no graphic designs then Wish i had photos.
You’ll most likely have come across Brigadier Hargreaves then at Bowcliffe, he was a grand old fella. I worked in the Hargreaves Group for a lot of years. I once delivered heating oil to the Brigadier’s cottage out in the sticks, him and his wife made me very welcome , invited me in and the ‘hospitality’ was second to none.

hi bri ask your dad does he remember this bloke brian makepeace-alan
I worked with Brian when he drove for Alan Stinson at Kilnhurst the lorry he had then was SWJ 690S which was ex beatson clark Seddon Atkinson 400 fitted with Gardner 240,then i worked with him again at Hillstate transport which was more or less across the road where he drove a Sedd Atki fitted with a ■■■■■■■ 290 before the Scania in the picture. While i drove a ERF B-series PAT639W with a ■■■■■■■ 290 before going back on the spanners at Syds.
Leonard Greens ERF Perkins 6.354 came Turbocharged, Len Greens fitters weren’t allowed to touch it as it was Experimental but no turbo when I had it running out of Bassets Sheffield but sill a 70mph flying machine ( till it saw a hill) Eaton two speed axle my last drive at Greens (Roy Halstead had it before me,in the driving seat?)
Having read the recent thread’s about yorkshire company’s, A one transport, Henry Longs, James c, Ashworth, etc, I wondered if anyone could shed any light on these…
first of all, i was driving from Doncaster to wakefield on the A638 the other day, when i got to the roundabout at Ackworth i suddenly remembered " Onward transport ", ERF’S, leylands, scammell crusaders, all in two shades of green,i think a lot of there trailers, had Spillers, written on the sides ■■? The site of there old depot is now a housing estate.
A few others from the area, now not trading ?
Bruda international, bradford, large sleeper cabbed marathons, in blue.
Pillarwest, 8 wheeler tippers, used to be seen all over west york’s
Joseph hoyle, maroon & grey, did a lot of steel haulage
There were three companies in the Onward or Ackworth group.
Onward Road Transport,Stockport.
Ackworth Transport,Pontefract.
Wheeler Road Transport,Sheffield.
All in two tone green livery and ran allsorts - Leylands,Dafs,Crusaders all spring to mind.
Joseph Hoyle was from Manchester and did a lot of work for Richard Johnson and Nephew, wiredrawers. They had a yard at Ambergate,Derbyshire working for the same company.
Somebody will correct me if I’m wrong - it was a long time ago.
Joseph Hoyles are now part of the Maxi group. As for Onward Ackworth, I seem to remember they j=had a tie-up with Baylis for a while. Other than that they just seem to have faded away like so many others.
i might be wrong but i think boc bought these out in the late 90s,i can remember going to bocs depot in barnsley (m&s ) in the corner of the yard was about 10 onward erfs all ready to be sold off,and the drivers i think had been transfered over to boc,.

I used to own an Onward liveried ERF and the log book said BOC Transhield on it so you would be correct in your thinking.
i worked for onward 30 odd years i think, out of selby depot, ackworth transport was in the same group they had the first franchise for daf wagons in the country, they all so had leyland they told that would have to choose between them they went for leyland big mistake.leyland bufffalos were the worst wagons i ever drove. BOC took onward over didnt have a clue and soon closed it down onward is still on the go but is a property company now

Correct - it was taken over by “BOC Interbrand”, which was an ambient depot & distribution network formed by BOC taking over the depot network and distribution operations of Smith Kline Beecham (as it then was), and formerly Beecham Foods.
They gradually screwed the job up and it all ended up being centralised at a new-build Wincanton warehouse in Brockworth. BOC Interbrand then came to a sticky end.
I’ve a recollection that one of the family that owned Onward (Ian Storey?) actually joined BOC.
hiya ,
doe’s anyone remember Bayfords they where stabled at hunslet i drove a tanker for them early in the 70s they also did tipper work coal ,i used to bring fuel oil for them on nightshift for delivery to their filling stations also carried polished water from power station to power station delivery point was always Blackburn Meadows alongside the M1 their underground supply having run dry and tap water had too many metallic floaters in it so not pure enough to flush the boilers ,all good things come to an end one of the best paying jobs i ever had , brand new scammell straight from a motor show had to wear dark glasses , never seen so much chrome and glitz .
