Does anyone remember the name of the Bradford outfit that the infamous Yorkshire Ripper (Peter Sutcliffe) drove for, once saw a calendar in some traffic office somewhere and it featured the firm all i can remember he was in the driving seat or standing by a red articulated motor can’t remember the make or model, used to see them travelling up/down the M6/A74 frequently, go on say it “saddo”.
thanks harry long retired.

seem to remember they were called Clarke’s but don’t remember them apart from as you mentioned, a well used photo of the [zb] showed him driving a Ford Transcon i.i.r.c

When I use to drive for Newsflow in the 90’s returning from Barnsley, I remember seeing a really good mural painted on the side of a house or shop on the A628 at Millhouse Green showing a red Albion flat from the 60’s belonging to some local haulier. I can’t remember the name of the firm, and as I was always on a night run I never did get a chance to take a photo of it.
I’ve not been up that way for years now, does anyone know if the painting is still there ?

I used the A628 through Millhouse Green on nights Tipit but that was in the early 80s and don’t remember that Albion painting. There was a firm from Barnsley called Kenworthys who ran red Albions in the 60s.Trying to think who else it could be.

Managed to get a photo of the sign this afternoon … and the firm was called Broadbent’s (Chris … ring any bells.)
How the old memory plays tricks, this is what I’d seen back then, seems it wasn’t a big mural on the gable end after all. !!!

All I could see in their yard behind was this Transit pick-up, the Atkinson and an old 8 legger chassis with no cab.

The transit pickup belongs to tim moorhouse brother of chris moorhouse who runs tom moorhouse at honley, I drove for him about 4 years ago now and tim had just got the transit to replace his old one which was in Hepworths pipes colours, The transit has photos on it depicting E B Broadbent which if i recall rightly is the firm tim ran,

Some firms i drove for.

Lister of halifax

W Greenwood halifax

Tom moorhouse Huddersfield

Hi,I would just like to say that D Sharps lads DID NOT work through the strike of 79.They were on picket at Gypsum in Sherburn and Redfearns Glass in Barnsley.Duncan Sharp used to send pallets up to Redfearns for the brazier. In fact even the milk float had trouble gaining entry!!

Another sheffield firm i remember was Caudles on queens road in sheffield

Another one from Ossett was Fred ------ from Owl Lane, ran tankers but I can’t remember his surname.

Fred Chappell.

Ken.

Gave me my start in road transport, 1960. Fred was a gentleman, one of the great guys, top class gaffer, I’ll never forget him.

Here’s an early one of Fred Chappells.

Aye, taken in the old gas works yard at Batley where our main depot was. Only later after Fred died did they move (on a much smaller scale) to Ossett.

Anybody out there remember Herbert Brown Ltd out of Huddersfield?
There was a photo of one of their wagons for sale on ebay recently, a 1972/3 Foden 4 wheel rigid with a very long drawbar trailer, both with tilt bodies. Registration was AVH 712K. Can anybody remember their livery?
There was another H. Brown, used to have a place at Stairfoot, Barnsley, running green, red and white motors - MANs towards the end.

Hi Fodenway This is AVH 712k, is this the same picture as on ebay, Mine still hangs in one of my sheds, this one was given to me by a fitter friend of mine ( now passed on ) who had worked on the truck, if IIRC it was black chassis & a bottle green cab. Cheers Mel, PS Think i’ve seen this picture on one of the other threds somewhere

Here’s a firm you used to see all over Yorkshire, especially when we had a coal industry …
Just recently finished this one…

Jerry

Thanks for the Herbert Brown info, lads, that publicity shot of yours is obviously the same wagon, but the one that’s on ebay is taken from the other side, with the trailer at an angle to the wagon. The livery is the same, although it’s a black and white photo. It looks like I’ve got no excuse not to build a model of it now…

Another sheffield firm i remember was Caudles on queens road in sheffield

Caudles did a lot of removals as well as running flats, most of them Albions.C H Preston bought one off them secondhand,552 DWJ, and it came with a Servis Time Recorder fitted, which was promptly removed by our union man. Caudles would expect drivers to load and travel same day down the road and I was told that to stop drivers fiddling about with the Servis T R they were given SAE postcards to pop in the post when they got to their digs at night so the postmark could be seen by the gaffer back in Sheffield next day.
Sort of a 1960s tracker…

I think caudles had a connection with tuffnells the parcel carriers
