hiya,
Worked at Bayfords at Hunslet pretty sure that in my time S&R was just down the lane from our yard we did fuel oil and there was tippers on coal as well, my job was mainly polished water to Blackburn Meadows Sheffield but changed trailers and picked a load of cherry up from time to time, Bayfords were good to work for payed over the odds.
thanks harry long retired.

Harry was it Woodlesford you are thinking of as that was next to Rothwell and the barge’s used to tip at that terminal and was shared by Shaws and Bayfords
cheers Johnnie

hiya,
Johnnie when i was at Bayfords they was definitely at Hunslet just where the M1 ended in those days, was it Moor lane??, we was on the right after passing the old Hunslet engine works smallish yard but quite a bit of land behind where the tippers operated from and seem to remember another tanker outfit further along the lane who i thought was S&R, this was early 70s and the grey matter isn’t all that good these days, but it was definitely Hunslet i was based at but did’nt work there very long,

Hi Harry, there was a cafe just there, next to Waddingtons place IIRC.
It was 1994 when I blew that Bayfords motor off on the M180,so no need to apologize

hiya,
Chris remember the cafe, i used to buy myself a breakfast buttie and have it in the yard with a nice cuppa before booking off and going to my digs for a kip, get up about two across the road for a pint or two bit more kip ready for a six pm start, oh the joys of being a free spirit, oh and Chris just pleased it was’nt me who did’nt respond to your “clear to return” flash, i always liked to think i was a knight of the road.

Harry you are correct it was later in the 70s as I did not go on to tankers until mid 70s and when we had the big strike 77/78 we picketed he oil terminal in Hunslet and our shop stewards were summoned to transport house to be reprimanded by Jack Ashwell (sp) who had come up from London so it was very late in the night when I got home and Shaws moved to Woodlesford after that. It seems my memory is the one that is failing. :unamused:

Hi Alan,I remember them, formerly known as Ibbotsons and their yard was on Lodge Lane Aston. They worked out of Foxes at Stocksbridge and ran all ERF I think - they were all 8-leggers and had a lot of LVs? - the one with the oval grille.

Hi Johnnie, remember John Powell well, also Terry Stocks, he was Alan Priestleys brother who’s name I couldn’t remember. All three of them would have made great Tornado pilots they were brilliant at low flying.

DOES anyone remember R J Masters in barnsley

Hi Lee, I drove for RJ Masters for quite a few years,I started there when it was Thomas Masters Ltd in the early sixties on a 3 ton Ford Custom Cab.Then when I reached 21, I abandoned ship to go on the big stuff and European work. Then in the mid 80s I returned. The firm was then R+J Masters, which was Robin and John Masters. They did UK and Euro haulage and storage. Mainly chemicals. Then there was a split in the early 90s and Robin went solo. As RJM Distribution Same sort of work . I was on the European side, Groupage out to wherever Then chemicals back from mainly Germany. In the early 2000s A firm caller TAP Freight bought them out , lock stock, after a steady start they seem to have really developed, Tth original Thomas Masters ltd is still going and in the Masters family of furniture removers ,but Robin and John from the RJ Masters are out of it now. John has died and Robin is retired and enjoying his life, no doubt as the oldest ■■■■■■■ in town, as he always was…Mick Watson

i used to work in the garage for robin 95 to 98 upon passing my hgv at 21 then tap took over and it went downhill overnight
i left and drove for alan lodge tankers the daf 95 in the picture i remember them new

Strange that Lee because when I left RJM I went to Alan Lodges too . He got a contract to pull trailers for Netto at South Elmsall . Some months later he lost it though but I stayed with the firm who took over . H+H Transport . I used to work with Alan Lodge when he was a driver for JML (Mac) Henderson at Ryhill. I used to get a wage there to compare with the Minister of Transport . Only I had to do about 140 hours a week :sunglasses:

did’nt mac have to become a insurance broker at one time.? as no one would insure him cos all the drivers kept avin accidents.

TIPIT:
When I use to drive for Newsflow in the 90’s returning from Barnsley, I remember seeing a really good mural painted on the side of a house or shop on the A628 at Millhouse Green showing a red Albion flat from the 60’s belonging to some local haulier. I can’t remember the name of the firm, and as I was always on a night run I never did get a chance to take a photo of it.
I’ve not been up that way for years now, does anyone know if the painting is still there ?

I used the A628 through Millhouse Green on nights Tipit but that was in the early 80s and don’t remember that Albion painting. There was a firm from Barnsley called Kenworthys who ran red Albions in the 60s.Trying to think who else it could be.

Managed to get a photo of the sign this afternoon … and the firm was called Broadbent’s (Chris … ring any bells.)
How the old memory plays tricks, this is what I’d seen back then, seems it wasn’t a big mural on the gable end after all. !!!

All I could see in their yard behind was this Transit pick-up, the Atkinson and an old 8 legger chassis with no cab.

haddy:
Does anyone know if H.Baker transport is still going, I used to know a few of their lads back in the '80’s when we used to backload off them when I was on for Perfects of Gt.Yarmouth. I think their yard was in Laurel St. Bradford. One or two names that spring mind are Walter, Keith, and not forgetting Barry who came and gave us a look whilst on holiday in Gt. Yarmouth several years ago. I was very pleased to meet up with him again.
Cheers everyone, Haddy (Dave)

yeah they are still going

I remember Bakers coming into Rawsons yard at Wakefield when I worked there up to 2004, delivering textile bales with a couple of old but very well cared for Fodens. The drivers used to say that Showmen were always asking to buy them - a double drive Foden in good condition being the ultimate on the fairground. Bakers wagons were always well turned out and beautifully signwritten,
Fodenway.

one of ackworth,s guy drawbars all ready for a trip across the water

Fantastic Carl, proper Brit haulier with a real drawbar outfit.

hiya,
Does anyone remember the name of the Bradford outfit that the infamous Yorkshire Ripper (Peter Sutcliffe) drove for, once saw a calendar in some traffic office somewhere and it featured the firm all i can remember he was in the driving seat or standing by a red articulated motor can’t remember the make or model, used to see them travelling up/down the M6/A74 frequently, go on say it “saddo”.
thanks harry long retired.
