DOES anyone remember R J Masters in barnsley

Hi Lee, I drove for RJ Masters for quite a few years,I started there when it was Thomas Masters Ltd in the early sixties on a 3 ton Ford Custom Cab.Then when I reached 21, I abandoned ship to go on the big stuff and European work. Then in the mid 80s I returned. The firm was then R+J Masters, which was Robin and John Masters. They did UK and Euro haulage and storage. Mainly chemicals. Then there was a split in the early 90s and Robin went solo. As RJM Distribution Same sort of work . I was on the European side, Groupage out to wherever Then chemicals back from mainly Germany. In the early 2000s A firm caller TAP Freight bought them out , lock stock, after a steady start they seem to have really developed, Tth original Thomas Masters ltd is still going and in the Masters family of furniture removers ,but Robin and John from the RJ Masters are out of it now. John has died and Robin is retired and enjoying his life, no doubt as the oldest ■■■■■■■ in town, as he always was…Mick Watson

mick you ave pm.

Hi 3300John, No it’s not my old Truck, nice pic though. Mine was “R” reg, the one in your pic “S” I lost mine when I went on holiday and the relief driver knacked the gear box up. It was well past it’s sell bye date from the point of view of S&R. They had told me if anything expensive went wrong they wouldn’t be able to justify cost of repairing it. It had done a few miles too, they only kept it so long because they knew I liked it and it kept going. My wife used to grumble “You think more of that truck than you do of me” I told her “Well I don’t have as much trouble from the truck” I was told one of our five N10’s ended up in Volvo’s museum as the highest recorded mileage for a truck ever, don’t know if it’s true or if it’s still there though. One was written off on the A1 at Ferrybridge, I picked the trailer up. He ran into the back of something at 20mph according to the driver when he was telling the copper.   The radiator was under the windscreen and the gearbox underneath the cab. Dammed good advert for Volvo safety though, I opened the cab door and apart from the steering wheel being bent it was all intact. Don’t know what happened to the other two.

Hi remy when I started at “Sykes” Bill Morris or (Wetherby Bill ) was there and he then went to “Patterson’s” the tar job would have been Lowca to Scunthorpe he did a bit over the water when at “Sykes” and Bill didn’t do steady anything it must be 30 years since I last saw him so I have no information on his whereabouts these days.
cheers Johnnie

If memory serves me right,There were two tanker companies operated by the same parent company in Huddersfield, Sykes and Shaws. Shaws used to run coal tippers and fuel oil from a depot in Milnsbridge. They later opened a larger tanker depot at Shelley just off the Huddersfield/Penistone road and diversified into general tanker business. Being a local lad,(well it is a few years back  ) I knew one or two of the drivers, including a couple from school-days.

Hi Yorkshireman your memory is fine both of them were owned by the Sykes family the tanker depot was at Shepley on the A636 at the junction with the A629 there was one or two ex Smith and Robinsons drivers there when I was there in the 70s and 80s and most of the oil tankers were based in Leeds at Hunslet all though they had around 15 depots they were all on fuel oils and only had two out based GP tankers one at Newbridge Edinburgh and one at Immingham .

Hi Sammy, I live down the road from Shepley. I used to go to school with Cabby Bray but I have no idea what happened to him. Black Bob was on Wyatts for a while. I have a terrible memory for names so I’m struggling to recall any others, sorry. John.

Johnny, didn’t Sykes have some motors near Hepworths place at Hazlehead between Flouch and Summer Wine country?

hiya,
Worked at Bayfords at Hunslet pretty sure that in my time S&R was just down the lane from our yard we did fuel oil and there was tippers on coal as well, my job was mainly polished water to Blackburn Meadows Sheffield but changed trailers and picked a load of cherry up from time to time, Bayfords were good to work for payed over the odds.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Harry,Bayfords used to run out of Immingham area as well in the 90s,probably out of Petrofina or Conoco. One of their motors passed me on the M180 one night and when I flashed him in he never winked his back lights so I wound my 3-axled Fodden with 280 RR up and blew him off the road - it weren’t you were it  .

hiya,
Chris if it was about 1972 and during the night it may well have been me, i went to immingham occasionally for a fill of “cherry” to go out on dayshift there was only two nightmen in those days and if it was me i would probably have been asleep, there was no Immingham motors in my time, but i was a proper driver and always acknowledged when not snoozeing, so a belated sorry.
