Chris Webb did I see on one of the threads that you use to drive for Talbot’s of Sheffield ?
Only I’ve come accross this cutting of theirs, was it well before your time with them. I think it said these 2 photos were taken on the Dodge’s first day out, then later in the day it hit a wagon belonging to a firm they were buying out.
hartley:
hi all does anybody remember d sharp and son from barnsley my dad used to drive for them in the 80s
Yes I remember D Sharp and Son I worked for Duncan in the mid 80’s and knew your Dad if his name was Steve, my name is Les Turton. I worked with all the Barnsley & Huddersfield lads and had one hell of a laugh. If I remember rightly your Dad left and went to Cutts at Barnsley where he had an accident at Warcop and I believe his son (perhaps you) was with him at the time. Nice to hear any other stories from the lads.
Hi another couple I have remembered are Wilf Baxters Sheffield ,Harry Bonsall Falkland Road Service L. Hadfield and Lou Wilson all Sheffield a lad I grew up with worked for Lords and Scotherns then on BSC I think he went into the power station when they ditched their own Transport at Parkgate

Hi all. I started at Hansons Haulage, Huddersfield, still going as Hanson Transport. Used to do a very good parcels service and regular night trunks to London and other strange places. London trunk fleet led by 8 wheeler open topped AEC’s, red open topped vans with fly sheets covering top.Gold lettering down the side pulling drawbar trailers. Harrisons of Dewsbury also ran about the same time. Huddersfield parcel company seem to have vanished.
I also worked for 20 years for Smith and Robinson Tankers from Rothwell, nr Leeds. Taken over by Hargreaves transport who now run tippers.
There was also Hanson tippers, green trucks mainly hauling coal, from Grangemoor,Huddersfield and Barnsley/Wakefield. Going back to earlier what about Peter Slaters tipper madmen from Gildersome. I think they closed down soon after the Ministry jumped all over them and the transport manager got sent down. Earlier reference to Crows Tankers, they had two running out of ICI huddersfield for years.
hi,did you know mi old mate geoff wilkinson worked for s & r for years, sadly died about 10 years since still mates with his sons.then there were bill brennen and his mate muffin man, harry think his first name was.
Hi BIGGEE. Sorry to hear about Geoff, had a few nights out with him, he was a good lad and liked a laugh. I knew Bill and Harry. Bill started up on his own or in partnership, but sadly died quite a while back. I arranged a re-union for S&R’s about 3 years ago, it was good to see so many of the old faces. I would have liked to arrange one for ALL the depots but there were too many problems getting in touch. We had a couple heard about it and turned up from Dahn saaf and one from Wales. Derek Donovan, who used to be depot Manager. Harry’s second name was Parkin if my memory serves me right. I’m still in touch with a couple of the lads, one of whom lives in New Zealand. Good old days and thousands of happy memories, it was a good firm to work for but I only joined after Hargreaves had taken over. I have some old truck photo’s I’ll have to dig out.
Hiya all, can anyone put a name to these ? Who was the Yorkshire haulier that ran Leyland Roadtrains, all Black exept for a “Starsky & Hutch” style coloured flash. From what I remember each unit had a different colour band, but I can’t recall any lettering on the wagons. I’m surprised there have been no photos cropping up of them yet, wasn’t they well known at Truckfest in the 80’s ? I’ve a feeling they may have done alot out of Netto at South Elmsall.

I wondered what happened to Smith & Robinson.
I used to peer through the fence at those immaculate looking orange wagons when I was a kid. Volvos mainly I think.
Seeing those wagons (and my uncle driving for Rawsons) really got me hooked and into transport.
I’ve just managed, thanks to some help from forum members, to post some pictures on the Transport Photo Forum/ Tanker pictures you might be interested in.
John Odgers was his name,ex guardsman, and one who really deserved the title “Gentleman” a really nice guy who I never heard say a bad word about others. a pleasure to know and work with. Sadly he died a few years ago. Sorry about making you feel old but just watch it. Like your parents no doubt told you “your not too old to get a clip round the earhole”
