coca cola kid:
Dose anyone remember Rycroft transport , not sure if the had connections with Onward at some time, Rycroft I am sure they sold out to Fowler Welch at Cambridge. The site at Hoyland Common Barnsley is still occupied by Armitage Transport Cheers Mel

Hi Mel.I remember Ryecroft Transport, they were a green and white or yellow colour IIRC and I think they sold out to Welches Transport at Stapleford,Cambridge. Not sure if the Welch in Fowler Welch is the same one.
Cheers,Chris.

When I use to drive for Newsflow in the 90’s returning from Barnsley, I remember seeing a really good mural painted on the side of a house or shop on the A628 at Millhouse Green showing a red Albion flat from the 60’s belonging to some local haulier. I can’t remember the name of the firm, and as I was always on a night run I never did get a chance to take a photo of it.
I’ve not been up that way for years now, does anyone know if the painting is still there ?

I used the A628 through Millhouse Green on nights Tipit but that was in the early 80s and don’t remember that Albion painting. There was a firm from Barnsley called Kenworthys who ran red Albions in the 60s.Trying to think who else it could be.

Hi Chris … the more I think of that painting, the more I think it was some kind of advertisement for the firm showing various scenes through the ages as it also shown a horse and cart carrying coal.
Heading towards Woodhead it would be on your left and I seem to think the track beside that gable end lead through to the haulage yard.

Thanks for that 480,glad to know they are still at it,there were some good lads on there,Wayne was one,but I think he moved to Gee’s at Wakefield.

Tipit - the mural at Millhouse Green is still there, and if you look down the yard, you’ll see a couple or three Atkis in preservation. The name of the bloke escapes me at the moment, but I’m assured he’s a nice fella who’ll talk wagons all day!
Durrans- their main cargo was the Carbon Black which they produce at Phoenix Works, Thurlstone and which is used in steelmaking. Their transport side was bought out in 2008 by Stillers, and their motors are now kept at Stiller’s place at Darton (Barnsley)(the old Shaw Carpets site) since summer 2009 when Durran’s garage at Barugh was sold to Ken Mallinson.

Thanks for all that info fodenway.

Thanks Paul,I wish I knew that Atki man in Millhouse Green.I never noticed a mural when I was going through on nights towards Woodhead, and my mate can’t remember it either.Maybe it was painted after 1985 when I came off the road to be a lowly shunter? When I was on tankers we used to go into Durrans with 6000 galls of special low gravity spirit, always a saturday morning delivery.A great drop it was,no sample testing, just “Tha knows weer it gus, lerrit go when thas ready lad,t’kettles on”
Another company that did bagged carbon black was Isaac and Israel Walker,Rotherham.IIRC their yard was on Ginhouse Lane,Greasborough Road near Laportes.
