Would You Drive A Tipper?

splitshift:
Not gonna post my wages on here,(not as much as my driver) but he is on a hell of a lot more per hour than many on here think is an acceptable wage for driving a lorry, and his hours 50/55 per week! so its not B/S, at the moment good tipper or mixer drivers can earn proper wages in my area.

I don’t think I’ve met a mixer driver on less than £10 p/h unless they’re BSing

I’d love to give tippers a go, just hard finding someone willing to give a 20 year old a chance even when I have 1 years experience driving a hgv full time.

Decent firms round our way all around 500 take home on wages Monday to Friday generally 6.30 4.30ish on 8wheelers.

There’s a very good reason for that, I don’t mean to be rude or disparaging in anyway but tippers is not really somewhere to leave how to drive a lorry properly, you need to have your wits about you and have a very good idea how the wagon is going to behave, with the best will in the world you’re not going to have that. Gain some experience on other more relaxed forms of driving and then bang your CV in, it’ll count for more if you’ve a decent amount of experience.

Good luck and I hope you get on tippers eventually as it’s bloody good fun (most of the time), challenging and NEVER boring

Andrew, are you the TM or the low loader driver(one of my mates low loader driver is on mega bucks but on mega hours)

Ah yes I understand completely, it’s definitely a huge step up skills wise than the curtainside deliveries using a moffet to unload that I’m used to. Just have to bide my time I guess

hahaha

I have driven tippers in the past. But tbh my view is that I’m a lorry driver, the front bit being the lorry and so have no snobbery, preference or whatever as to what form the bendy bit behind takes as long as the money suits me.

You are not seriously comparing the two are you? Curtainsider with a mounty forklift versus tippers? It’s a world apart. I’ve done both and tippers is far more challenging. But who I am to question you and your years of varied experience.

For me, “it depends”. I’ve done tipper work delivering stone from quarries to roadworks and you were expected to drive like that black and white movie.

I’ve done waste tipper work and that is an entirely different kettle of fish and far more laid back.

That’s exactly what I’ve written isn’t it? I wasn’t being funny in saying its a huge step up skills wise because I agree completely that it is. I’ve never claimed to have ‘years of varied experience’ either. I was just saying what I do have experience in. thanks for the sarcastic comment :unamused: :grimacing:

My bad I assumed there was sarcasm in your first post. Sorry.

My last payslip was £450 take home, 5 days 47.5 hours. I car share with a mate so that’s another £15-20 p/week. No nights out but we do have trampers who obviously earn more. I’m sticking with days as the wife’s happy.

:open_mouth: You told me it was good money, better than Smith’s but you may need to look around a bit. a lot more than that going in the right places.

Round my part of the world pays far better money than tramping, trunking or multidrop, home indoors by 17.00-18.00 no maxing out hours or living like a dosser!

I can understand what your saying but all my mate’s on tippers are lucky to take home 300.00 a week.

I probably could get more John, but it’s better than what I got at Smiths with a lot less nonsense. (Nobody remembers/cares how many backloads you do  ) and it’s better than what the small time subbies pay. There is a new name around here running red and black Scanias who allegedly pay £110 per day. They’ve come from nowhere to everywhere in a short time which experience tells me to be wary of.
End of the day, Earthline have a lot of work, I get no hassle at all (I was told I would do), the lorries are all new, we can afford to live and I know the job inside out.
I’m happy (for a change)

I’ve been driving tippers for the best part of 2 years now after having been put through my Class 2 training by the company I work for.

My grandad ran a haulage company running 8x4 tippers & that’s where my love of trucks stem from, unfortunately my grandad has since retired & passed away.

I enjoy driving a tipper you get to go all over albeit our company only works locally IE Yorkshire. I’ve just spent this morning delivering to York Racecourse and had access to some nice views of the grandstand & paddock as well.
