Would You Drive A Tipper?

My earnings would be almost inline with Muckaway except with the addition of £35.00 shift allowance, a clean lorry bonus (£40 a week). As I’ve stated I typically work 6 hours a night 5 nights a week. On the rare occasion I night out then that’s another £25 (sadly just been reduced)

So a quick bit of maths gives me £23.00 p/h however if you break this down over 10 hours a night it 's £13.8. That’s AFTER I’ve buggered about with tax and NI. As there as people driving artics for £7 per hour I don’t reckon tippers pays that bad at all. This is based on a typical week with no nights out.

In fairness I don’t draw that as a wage from my business but it’s what I charge.

Still waiting for Tipper Tom to yes or no to letting me have a shot to prove a Tesco driver can drive one without getting lost, stuck etc

I asked the man himself, he said, ask me again Monday. So I’ll do that.

If he says yes, then you’ll have to come with me, never used a tipper before

Wish our gaffer would introduce a clean cab bonus. I swear by a clean cab, coming in early when I’ve been off for a few days it more to ensure its clean. Some drivers do let it slide & the boss threatens to take their driving bonuses off them.

I can understand what your saying but all my mate’s on tippers are lucky to take home 300.00 a week.

If they are hauling dry stone for the quarry firms there’s zero money in that!If firms tried paying that sort of money round here it would be in the local papers “unexplained fire at lorry firm 20 tippers destroyed” or come Monday morning yard full of lorries all minus wheels & batteries, been sold to make up wages

£40 bonus a week just to keep the wagon clean, that’s a good little earner your on there!

The muck firms that pay crap wages tend to be the ones who drive like idiots and drive across the tip at full speed. Good to start with but anyone there long term or been in the game a long time tend to be ■■■■■■■■■

I know of one firm in West Yorkshire who during the recession stopping paying drivers overtime and decided to pay all drivers a flat rate of £X per hour no matter how many hours you do meaning they were taking home less than the other firms in the area.

The company I work for:

Flat rate of £7 per hour upto 40 hours
Then overtime rate of £10.50 per hour for 40 hours upwards
Then a driving bonus of £12.50 per day (However the boss may increase your bonus if you’ve had a good week)
Then a monthly bonus of £50 per month.

We have a fuel bonus but I’ve never got it, driving a MAN auto on locals normally loaded both ways it’s nigh on impossible. Our artic drivers get the best figures then the Scania rigids. Re looking after your wagon, I think mine’s tidy enough considering there’s no washdown facility…Have to rely on a friendly fitter when my lorry goes back for it’s 2 weekly check.

To be fair I’d do it for free as can’t stand a dirty truck

does driving an 8 wheel ro/ro on scrap count as tipper  if not I wouldnt mind a trying it

Ouch! We have the use of an jet wash at our yard and there is a rota for Saturday washing for drivers as 2 drivers come in to wash, works out at roughly every 6 weeks. Some drivers do not like the idea of working on a idea & give their Saturday shifts to someone else.

It doesn’t bother me, I don’t own it after all. Got a good wheelwash so I’ll run it through it a couple of times every evening/afternoon. On the bright side I haven’t washed a single lorry since May 2012. At my last place they had a Saturday washdown rota but giving up part of my weekend to wash lorries is not my idea of fun.

Yes I would, and have done before. In fact I think 8 wheelers are the most fun truck to drive.

Fun Yes and the safest, more chance of turning a corner in zb conditions than being pushed straight on by two driving axles and only one steering, as in 6 wheelers.

8 wheelers are the safest lorries on the road. Depends on the driver but generally IMO they are

Have a look at Kr’s post about flying across the tip with the body up,saw one yesterday with grab full up as well :open_mouth: (kept well clear of the idiot)
