Wincanton Chilled , Milton Keynes

I’m trying to get some photos on but can’t. I was working at Wincanton Chilled in the 80’s and 90’s Milton Keynes. Anyone out there who was there at the same time and can advise on putting the photos on - is this still live - ANYONE OUT THERE?

Hi Mark one,
I use Photobucket, its quite easy…if I can do it anyone can
Look forward to seeing your pictures

Trev.

Photo 3 of the Daf 95 was new to Milton Keynes and was on Happy Shopper and was in their orange colours. I used it once to go to Scottish Dairies in Glasgow with a load of Muller yoghurt before they opened their own factory in Shropshire. As we only had 2 sleeper cabs then, I know this was a Milton Keynes unit from new.

Nice photo Trev. I spy tandem shed 40021 3rd from the right,we inherited that heap at Maltby.

Here’s a few pictures I took back in the 90’s when I worked for Wincanton at Milton Keynes, The depot in Bletchley ( which used to be the old ‘Scot Meats’ depot ) closed down in 2003 and most of it has now been demolished. :astonished: Anyone got any pictures of SCOT MEATS lorries? they used to run some AEC V8 Mandators in the 60’s!

This used to happen quite regularly :unamused:

Well Lemonmouth, they certainly brought some memories back to me.Being a Maltby shunter I was more interested in trailers than units and 40173 was a Maltby based shed - I always tried to get rid if possible. Those Sun Valley trailers were a pain as most of 'em had underslung fridges and a lot of drivers hadn’t a clue how to use 'em - I was always bailing Maltby drivers out if they had one on the back. The tandem on the back of the DAF95 was supposed to hold 24 pallets but you struggled with the 24th as they had shutters as opposed to doors and the 26 pallet tandems had one hell of a rear overhang as you probably know.
Thats the best thing that could have happened to 40040 by the way, another shed that I always tried to get back to Chippenham as it was on their books - what a heap of crap that trailer was.Who dropped it,mate? Not the shunter- no never.
We had H209 TYA at Maltby for a bit but no Leylands.
Going back to trailers “falling off” :open_mouth: I was the first to drop a double-decker in Maltby yard with about 20 witnesses smoking and drinking coffee as I forgot to wind the legs down and flew off as shunters do.It was fully loaded for Tesco Livingston and a tranship was unthinkable.A quick inspection at the VMU rendered it serviceable thank god as I wouldn’t have been rayt popular with the warehouse loaders.
Any more photos?
PS. I remember Scots of Bletchley running about years ago.

Chris, Whatever do you mean ‘not the shunter’! if you look closely to the right you can just see the old shunt motor legging it a bit sharpish  they had an old yellow roadtrain for what seemed like a lifetime and about 6 months before they closed they had a brand new one delivered  I have to agree with you some of those 400■■ trailers were dreadful, but they kept using them right to the end.

Ive got some pics of Maltby depot,I’ll put 'em on tomorrow.
It wouldn’t be a full-time shunter that dropped that shed, more like a driver filling in.

some nice photos thanks a lot,

Was the DAF ever at Maltby Chris?

The registration number rings a bell - I’m sure I drove it a few times when I did a bit on the agency at Maltby in 1997.

Yes I think it was Andy.H273 HRE.I think we may have inherited it from Uttoxeter depot when it closed. If so,it would account for the Staffordshire reg RE.
Just think, you and me will probably have met when you were there - hope I was polite.

Here’s few pics I took at Maltby in 1994,not long after the Malton Bacon contract started. The first three show the receiving stock bays and my mate Chuck,a fellow shunter backing one on.We had no shunting tractor then so everything was left coupled for reloading.

The Merc G764 KYB was called Ginger(amongst other things  ) and was a gutless pig.

L601 MYD ERF EC10 was Paul Stone’s regular motor. He sadly died not long after this photo was taken.
The trailer DL773 was new but didn’t stay in this condition very long.
The overhang on these 26 pallet tandems caught one or two out.

A view of the seven loading bays - there were never enough of 'em. Those TIP rentals left a lot to be desired,I was always calling 'em out for one thing or another.

The FL10 was the only one of it’s kind on the fleet at Maltby, and I.m sure it’s over here in the Isle of Man now, shunting Co-op trailers on the Island.Of course it has a Manx reg now so I can’t be sure.It just looks familiar if you know what I mean.

We had a vehicle wash as well, not rayt clever but better than nowt.

We had one ERF EC10 sleeper L597 MYD.I don’t know why as everything was double-shifted.The little Merc at the side was for panic deliveries, usually for bloody Tesco who took priority over all other chains. You knew when trouble was brewing when the warehouse supervisor would come on the radio shouting "Eyup Chris,I’ve found a pallet for Snodland mis-marshalled,has t’wagon gone yet?  It was never Doncaster 12 miles up the road, always Snodland,Didcot or Livingston. :open_mouth:

The following year we started getting some of these, very popular as most of our drivers couldn’t handle ERFs with Fuller boxes.Personally, being an old sod I enjoyed driving the ERF E10s and EC10s on the odd times I went out,but there you are…

I’ve got a few photos of the shunting tractors we inherited so I’ll put 'em on.
That concludes the depot visit for the moment.

Whilst I’ve got me scanner out here’s some of the shunting tackle we were supplied with at Maltby.

This Scania 92 came from the Middlebrook Mushroom contract that Wincanton had at Selby. We inherited it towards the end of 1994 via Aveling Barford,Grantham where it had a dock-spotter fitted.
24 hours a day, seven days a week and it was goosed after a year :open_mouth: ,in fact it had two new 5th wheels fitted as the others kept cracking.

This was one of two Douglas Tugmasters that we got .The old fleet number was HIP14 and I wondered if anybody recognised from a dock somewhere. It was ok as it was long wheelbase and ideal for fridge work but the Leyland 0600 engine choked us to death and everybody else in the yard.
It was condemned by our H and S.Yes,that’s me posing.
We then inherited an ERF E10 about “G” plate I think, from Malton.I have no pic of it but you are not missing owt!
After continual breakdowns and no back-up shunter to keep bloody Tesco loading times in front  and a lot of meetings about budgets etc, this little beauty arrived at 0500 one morning on the back of a low-loader.Sorry,me posing again.

A proper piece of kit and apart from a hydraulic ram leak and a cracked 5th wheel it never let us down. The only problem was that nobody wanted to part with it when it was due service and we eventually got so busy with other contracts,Geest in particular that we got a second Terberg.
After all that we were all made redundant the following year.
The depot is still run by Cannotwin on a Sainsbury’s contract.
