Excellent pics Chris I’ve got a few more somewhere - watch this space
Chris Webb:
Yes I think it was Andy.H273 HRE.I think we may have inherited it from Uttoxeter depot when it closed. If so,it would account for the Staffordshire reg RE.
Just think, you and me will probably have met when you were there - hope I was polite.
If I remember rightly, it was the only DAF 95 there. The majority of the fleet then would have been DAF 85’s and Scanias (early 4 series?) The DAF was a real shed but it went OK.
We probably would have met even though I only went in a few times. As the shunter you probably would have been annoyed with me as my reversing was pathetic back then
Went into Maltby back in November and they now run the Sainsburys/Jacksons contract. It would be an understatement to say that the job has gone down the pan!
Correct Andy,I only remember one DAF 95 there and yes we started getting Scania 124Ls.They weren’t popular at all,not a patch on the old 112Ms that I drove in the 80’s.
I never got annoyed with anybody who was a bit green reversing mate, and would help/advise anybody who asked. It was the drivers, both Wincanton and Agency who couldn’t be bothered to ask if they were unsure of owt - especially setting and running fridges that used to p— me off.
I know two of the shunters on the Sainsbury’s job - Roger Clayton and Chris Bates, both on days.Rog keeps updating me via the web.He tells me drivers don’t stop long 'cos of the split rest days and multi-drops.A four on four off rota would be better on a 24/7 operation like that.
A few more from Wincanton’s Milton Keynes depot in the 90’s
Afraid its not HIP14 Chris, In fact I cant really remember this one at all, I think it just appeared overnight and disappeared even quicker I do remember that not long after they had the New Terberg, one of our drivers got run over in the yard and was sadly killed, can you remember It?
Yes I do remember that sad incident but never found out exactly what happened.
Those Kerrygold trailers were sheds and those Brockworth U.B. trailers were not popular 'cos of the beams inside. The Scania T681 RJL was at Maltby for a bit - I always remembered the reg JL was Lincolnshire.
Excuse me for being an anorak but 40017 was new to Maltby in 1994 and Im sure the 114 Scania on the front was allocated to Maltby as well.
Those trailers inherited from Rokold were in good order and the trailer on the back of the Hereford Volvo - 40452S - brings back a smile as the “S” stood for “smart” and no jump-starting from t’shunter was allowed. You had to get a fitter out. However,my mate put 24 volts through it one day as he used both batteries on the Terberg and that trailer was never the same after that. At least we got a proper 12v plug fitted on t’shunter after that.
Somebody told me that the HIP fleet numbers were Harwich International Parkestone Quay but whether that’s true I don’t know.
It was hard work trying to keep your own trailer fleet and every depot,Maltby included tried to get rid of all the sheds .It got so bad that I used to ask the freighter clerk to get the trailer numbers off the computer that were coming in to Maltby from MK,Chipp,T.Park, etc on the trunks. If any were sheds they got a shed back - always kept one in reserve even if I was stuck for tackle.
Bloody sad owd bugger,eh.
Thanks for the pics, any more mate?

Must be the one I drove then! Nice to see a picture of it again!

They’ve just changed again by all accounts. There were a whole load of us agency lads in the week it changed and everything was chaos. I worked three nights running and it got worse as the week went on. The first night, I got turned back half way to the first drop. (Store rang and refused delivery as they were due to close)
Second night, actually got to first drop. Refused again as they were closing.
Third night, never even got allocated a wagon and went home after 5 hours sat in transport office
Sounds about rayt that Andy.As well as decent drivers you want good warehouse lads as well to get stuff picked and loaded on time.Ive seen it all before at Maltby and other places where they take ages to get it right.
We were running so late one Xmas that some RDCs never got a delivery and a lot of product was skipped. It was absolute chaos, the yard was a tip, nowhere for subbies to park and no room for any stock coming in from Malton,Ashton etc…
Some drivers were having to park at Hellaby until they were called in.
Great days though 'cos you were always guaranteed a laugh, there were some grand lads in that warehouse - mind you I suffered 'cos I was a “dee-dah” and they suffered 'cos they were “pit moggies”,to which they replied “wrong,SUPERPIT moggies”.
Your Douglas Tugmasters were from Harwich “Parkestone” International Port.
Tuggies used to thrash them to death down there plus they used to pull very heavy Dutch fridge trailers.

Thanks for that Stupot, wondered where they came from.Somebody did mention Harwich when HIP14 first arrived.
It got thrashed at Maltby as well and eventually parked up 'cos of excessive smoke.
great pictures of maltby, was this the old littlewoods depot in the early 90s?if it was i spent many a happy hr waiting to be tipped

Yes,the very same rich. The Littlewoods contract finished in 1994 Feb,and the depot re-opened in May for the Malton Bacon contract.Wincanton bought out Glass Glover Distribution - the original owner - in 1991.The Malton Bacon/Grampian Foods contract finished in July 2005 and was transferred to Innovate at Manton Wood,Worksop. It is now operating on a Sainsbury’s contract.
I was there for 27 years,18 years as a shunter so we will have met.
Who did you drive for?
hi chris, i drive for united biscuits we used to go to maltby most fri mornings ,then up to teeside for a backload home, there used to be a young girl in the goods in office that always asked your reg no when booking you in,we always said pen1s used to catch her with that one every week.

More than likely she enjoyed hearing that reg. no. rich.there were all shapes and sizes worked in goods in.
I remember U.B. very well and I got to know one or two of their drivers, can’t remember any names though. One was from Ashby-de-la-Zouch and he knew the pubs in Ashby and Whitwick that my Auntie used to keep.U.B. also had a depot on the Eastwood Trading Estate in Rotherham-KP nuts.
Some shifts were quicker than others at tipping and it was always a job getting a couple of bays for meself - let’s call it friendly banter - shunter v goods in.
i run from ashby,i know the driver that knew the pubs in whitwick, he took early retirement about 5 years ago but still drove for ub on a agency, but died suddenly shortly after.the kp factory in rotherham is still open but no lorries are based there now.
My Uncle and Auntie had the “Hole in the Wall” in Ashby, rich and it had a men only bar-sometime in the early 60’s.Before that they kept a big pub in Whitwick,I can’t remember it’s name but it stood on its own and a lot of colliers went in.Before that they kept the Plough Inn at Diseworth in the 40’s/50’s (when it was RAF Castle Donnington up the road) and the pub had a thatched roof. It’s still open apparantly but I haven’t been in it since I was a kid in the 40’s and 50’s.
So I take it that UB is still running out of Ashby?
ashby is the only depot that has trucks based there, when i started with ub in 1988 they had depots all over the country but they all closed over the last 10 yrs. everything is run from ashby now mainly by outside contractors,ub only has about 20 units and a couple of rigids, but we still have about 200 trs .i work nights which used to have over20 drivers on it,but we are down to 8 now.as drivers retire they are not replaced, this seemed to have happened to most own account fleets,

I know what you mean mate. When I were a lad the best jobs were with the large breweries like Whitbread,British Oxygen,Air Products and of course the fuel/chemical firms.British Steel was another but - and I stand corrected here -all those jobs were subbed out to companies like Wincanton,Hoyer,TDG,Exel to name just a few. That’s not to say there aren’t any good driving positions nowadays but when I read some of the forums and see what todays drivers have to say I think there was a lot to be said for the “good old days”.
Of course the tackle is far superior now and so it should be,but I always went for the money and conditions first and the wagons second.
So it looks like UB are going the same way then rich?
its still a good job at the moment, even better than when i started( 20 handball drops a day in brum on a d series ford rigid)but to see the fleet get smaller over the years is very sad.ub in the late 80s early 90s were one of the biggest fleet buyers of ford/daf in the uk.sadly not anymore
