Why you sould never waste money on a satnav

I see you people asking all the time … “What Satnav should I buy ?”
Answer 'None FFS. Each time I hear of some idiot who has thrown money away on a pointless item it makes me laugh. Prime example ;
Monday evening heading north on I-81 in Virginia some guy on the CB asks “Anyone tell me the best route to Lebanon PA ?”
“Yep” some guy replies “Head north on 81 and it turns into I-78, you will see the exit for Lebanon, make a right and follow the main route”
“Thank you” then some other guy chirps in telling him another pointless route, then another and another so I chip in.
"Why are you confusing him ? The first route given was spot on and now you all tell him other routes, the first one is virtually a straight line, what could be easier ? Then the guy who asked the question speaks up “Well the first answer is the same as my satnav says”
“Why on earth would you subject yourself to all of this if you have a satnav ?”
“I don’t trust it”
This is my main point … If you need a satnav to drive a truck you need to find a different job and so does that idiot. I think most just want a nice screen in front of them to show off LOL. As said before look up the location on your phone app and when you get near touch the navigate icon, its doesn’t cost you a thing. Or… Buy a dam map.

Your right pat , drivers who need to put the dimensions of the lorry in a sat nav are just steering wheel attendants , I use my car tomtom one ( the tiny one ) for longitude and latitude as I go to places off road and quite often the people already there can’t tell me how they got there because they followed sat nav !

Get with the times Grandad.

Oy !! don’t you be so cheeky . Your not too old for a clip round the ear 'ole young Radar
Regards. John.

I use a truck sat-nav, input my size/weight and off I go down the road. Easy as that. Wouldn’t be without it!

I have one of the latest sat navs. Tells me everything from traffic jams to low bridges. I agree that people shouldn’t just follow them blindly but I would not want to be without mine.

Company policy at our gaff. No sat nav allowed.

Oh dear yet another old time driver thinking his way is the only way.

We have to have sat navs as the office send all the work to them. They do come in handy if you’re going somewhere new.

When will people like you realise a satnav is just a box of maps? I think the driver did well, set a route via satnav and then asked others their view. If he’d blindly followed satnav and got stuck you’d have been lambasting him. As it is he did the sensible thing and you’re still lambasting him. Your high horse only has 3 legs from where I’m sitting

Op is a dinosaur of the biggest order :unamused: Just because your job does not need a sat nav my job does but I don’t blindly follow it some times it’s only set just to give me heads up on traffic or distance left
also I get work sent through on there

Oh heck, another sat nav good vs bad thread…ah well might as well keep typing!

I can imagine in the US there isn’t as much need for a sat nav as long as you’ve got decent maps since everything is so far apart and multi-drop is probably like us going from Coventry to Ipswich to Aberdeen so plenty of time figure it out in the map. In this country, if I’m going long distance I do tend to consult the map more than the nav, but it does have some big advantages.

  1. My expensive all-singing all dancing Tomtom truck one knows traffic flows and is surprisingly accurate which a map can’t do.
  2. It knows pretty much all the weight limits I’ve come across so less chance of accidentally missing the sign and getting a wrist slap / fine.
  3. It stops me having to look at a bit of paper on the seat where I’ve written down the instructions which is rather distracting.

Oh and I’m a steering wheel attendant because I don’t get paid enough to be an old-school “driver”, or at least this is what several people on here are going to call those of us who like expensive sat navs.

[Awaits Robroy and Juddian for starters]

Edit: Blue Estate has a good point there especially when those in the office with a tracker, still phone up and ask “how long until you get to X” which kindof requires the nav for anything remotely accurate. Many infact seem to assume you’ve got one.

Don’t get me wrong, they are handy, I only use a truck one as it was a gift (trucker 6000) otherwise I’d have continued using my phone maps when I got near to where I need to be.

But

All sat navs should say on the box…

…common sense not included!

At the end of the day if it’s telling you to drive down a rediculous alleyway as they all do at some point then more fool you for even thinking about attempting it

Robroy and I came to an understand on this topic, he has to ask my permission first.

Permission granted! :grimacing:

Since I gave up on dedicated Satnavs and started using Google Maps I set it for almost every journey despite not needing directions for most, simply because the traffic information on there is so ■■■■ accurate.

Go on OP you tell em, all this modern fandangle stuff, someone tried to convince me to part with my mule for a internal combustion engine, I slapped him across the face with some tripe out of my Buttie box!

I assume the OP bemoaned the arrival of the airsprung seat, power assisted steering, power assisted brakes, electric windows, synchromesh gearboxes, heated mirrors, maps printed on paper rather than velum, nylon ropes, ratchet straps, air handbrakes on trailers etc. etc. etc…

Lol. I am more interested in John (old 67) 2atting Radar.

Do him John…

A sat nav is an electronic map. When I first started out I only used a-z map books. Sometimes I’d plan my route, then get to a road that didn’t look too clever, so i wouldn’t commit to it. Same applies now, if the sat nav tries to sent me somewhere that doesn’t look right I don’t commit.

Sat nav in my bag is far easier than 20+ map books in passenger foot well.

:unamused: What a load of ■■■■
I’ve been using a satnav snooper 7000 for the last 8 years , I use it as a guide … before that I would be carrying round a big box full of maps a/z maps … spent a bloody fortune on them over the years …
I still carry a few maps the London bible had that map for over 20+ years … still a good map with lots of sticky tape holding together :grimacing:

Just up dated my snooper

Oh and one of the bridge height maps as well :grimacing:

Ps oh work provide us now with one of the big tomtom ones gets interesting if using both as the crazy route they can chuck up
