Why you sould never waste money on a satnav

My mate is 62 and has 2 sat navs in the window.
He reminds me of grandad,in only fools and horses…with the 2 tellys.

Oh and I’m a steering wheel attendant because I don’t get paid enough to be an old-school “driver”, or at least this is what several people on here are going to call those of us who like expensive sat navs.

[Awaits Robroy and Juddian for starters]
.

Mate…can I just clarify my view on sat navs (again :unamused: ) btw Evil, you are right, I was awaiting your clearance
I aint against them at all, I have one myself…, ok not one of those ridiculously expensive ones that only astronauts and some of you guys use.
What I do is plan a route on sat nav, cross ref it on my bridge map, and set any alternatives according to map, until I’m happy with route, so that it ‘‘talks me round’’ the route, to save me keep checking map.
Ok not everybody’s way, but it works for me, and I am still choosing the route rather than being told (or ‘‘sent’’ as the terminology some of you lot use. :unamused: )

What I am against are the ones who totally rely on it and are too stupid to think for themselves, a high risk of this if using a spoon fed, foolproof (well sometimes :unamused: ) arse wiping one…(sorry about last bit Evil, you know me, I just can’t help myself  )

Pat Hasler:
I see you people asking all the time … “What Satnav should I buy ?”
Answer 'None FFS. Each time I hear of some idiot who has thrown money away on a pointless item it makes me laugh. Prime example ;
Monday evening heading north on I-81 in Virginia some guy on the CB asks “Anyone tell me the best route to Lebanon PA ?”
“Yep” some guy replies “Head north on 81 and it turns into I-78, you will see the exit for Lebanon, make a right and follow the main route”
“Thank you” then some other guy chirps in telling him another pointless route, then another and another so I chip in.
"Why are you confusing him ? The first route given was spot on and now you all tell him other routes, the first one is virtually a straight line, what could be easier ? Then the guy who asked the question speaks up “Well the first answer is the same as my satnav says”
“Why on earth would you subject yourself to all of this if you have a satnav ?”
“I don’t trust it”
This is my main point … If you need a satnav to drive a truck you need to find a different job and so does that idiot. I think most just want a nice screen in front of them to show off LOL. As said before look up the location on your phone app and when you get near touch the navigate icon, its doesn’t cost you a thing. Or… Buy a dam map.

To be fair its about as intelligent as the original post

You’re right. It looks like I’m not going to leave the house now.

OK, my view on satnav.

Its a brilliant pocket sized street map of the country, used as a street map to initially find whereabouts in a town your destination is to help map planning, then to help you in the last few miles, they are truly superb bits of kit.

They are also good for, as said, letting them scroll along whilst you drive your own route, watching junction approaches, spotting hidden or unsigned roads and sometimes you come up to 5 way roundabouts in urban areas with not a single bloody sign and having to guess the road you need (there’s one like that near Gedling), they are invaluable as confirmation at such junctions.
If they have traffic info thats great too, and handy to confirm the speed limit of the road you are on now and again and the odd bong to remind you of a regular camera spot is useful too.

Where i differ from some is that i don’t see any need for an expensive lorry nav as such, a satnav has no place planning a lorry driver’s route for them, that’s the job lorry drivers are paid to do.
If i use a nav at all the route isn’t programmed, its on ‘‘traffic’’ only and the only sounds i want to hear is the odd bong to warn me of a camera ahead.

Had 5 drops today. Used my Garmin 770 on 1. Iv been to the other jobs at least once before so not needed but it’s perfect for finding the job the first time. I do agree if a driver needs a sat nav to go to the same places time after time then he probably isn’t very good. I’m also lucky as where i work chances are one of the lads has probably been there before so verbal directions are usually the best option anyway. I do enjoy days I can leave the thing in the box and just enjoy the drive.

If I was going to the same places all the time I might not bother with a satnav. However, I do general and much of that is multi-drop around London. With the exception of taxi drivers I probably know London as well as anyone and I’d be lost without it.

Pointless asking Londoners for directions, most of em don’t even know the names of their neighbouring boroughs… and that is the truth.

Am I alone, in that most days I don’t get my maps or Google Earth out, because I bloody know where I’m going. I see a lot of drivers who purport to have been driving in this country for 20+ years, who seem awfully keen to explain how they use maps or Google Earth ‘only to guide me’ , going to lengths to point out how they plan every journey in advance… Really? But if they really are that knowledgeable, why do they still need maps? Or worse, a satnav or Google Earth? How did they cope before?

Sat navs are a waste of time & money in my eyes, I hate using the things. Google Maps, Streetview & a truckers atlas are all you need for the job. Once you have found somewhere once using a map, you rarely need to look again & you develop a much greater knowledge of the roads.

I have sympathy for the multi droppers for whom Sat Nav’s do save a lot of time, but otherwise forget it. Ludicrous the amount of times you see drivers complaining that they got lost trying to find some place because of an incorrect postcode for the satnav, its sad, when a glance a Google Maps would have shown that it’s just a couple of turns from Junction x off the A x. Talk about overcomplicating the job…

I have three questions:

1, what is the fastest route from coop or Tesco at purfleet to 44 berth at 8am on a Friday?

2, which is the fastest route from 26 berth to Doncaster departing 26 berth at 1630hrs?

3, where are all the bridges in London where the max height is 14’6"?

P.S. I call wahhhh

Don’t know if you’re meaning me, but to be fair I never once said that I do that procedure for every journey.
I just explained how I personally use my sat nav if and when I do.

Oh dear ! :unamused: .
Love the irony of YOU telling anybody to grow up.

Try and form a reply next time in the form of a sentence, without a beligerent tone, and the use of swearing, if only to try and convince us that you actually do have a reasonable level of maturity to contribute on a forum for adults…(but only if you feel the need to, as I never take you seriously on here anyway tbh.)

We have company sat navs and wherever we go we follow the designated route which has been inserted by transport which is great because if it goes pear shaped I ain’t to blame, of course I am allowed if needs arise to use my professional discretion as long as it’s justified

Exactly the way I did it when sat nav first came out. Often had to go quarries and farms so used to work it out on the Philips map then see what the sat nav said. If I didn’t agree with it, I’d recalculate the route!

Was given a map the other day to find a job. Really handy because it showed the site entrance off the road. Unfortunately there wasn’t a road number on the map. They did give me the ordnance survey coordinates though. Which isn’t handy if you don’t actually have the map.

Epic fail mate. :unamused: tut tut.
As for being intellectual, you certainly lower the bar making competition very easy.
Not going to trade insults with the likes of you mate, so take your own advice.and do one, while I just from now on ignore your childish attempts to appear clever.
So crack on and continue to show yourself up.
