Hauling up the A34 from Winchester towards the M40 on Friday morning a car pulled in front of me from a slip road doing about 50. I was on cruise control at 56 so as I got nearer to him I pulled out to overtake. As soon as I got alongside him he accelerated away in the inside lane so I moved back over. Within a minute or so he started to slow down a bit so I gained on him & again moved over to overtake. Yet again as soon as I was alongside he put his foot down a bit & pulled away. This happened 3 more times, so once I’d (again) pulled in behind him I flashed my lights & did the one handed “what?” shrug/gesture. Almost straight away, a hand came out of the driver’s side window and gave me the finger.

You rose to his “bait” i’m afraid, you also showed your annoyance at his crap driving with the light flashing bit(unless that was a correct signal to show him you were there?)
I would have continued to attempt to overtake as many times as possible until he got bored of the cat and mouse game and buggered off into the distance,or off at his exit.
Don’t mean to sound pedantic, but as you were on a dual carriageway, wouldn’t you have been legal if you’d stuck to 50?

How would that help? The ■■■■ in the car would have just needed to slow down a little to play his game!
I find the M69 between Coventry and Leicester nearly always has a car doing about 1mph less than me so I have to judge whether it’s worth overtaking or not. I had some t1t in an Toyota Igo matchbox car the other week speed up as I was overtaking. I put my main beam on, pulled back in and sat behind him. Sure enough he soon drove off
As to why they speed up, I will never know
It happens sometimes if I move over to let a car join from a slip road so now I’ve got vehicles behind me and a car on the inside doing the same speed so I can’t go anywhere. 99% of the time now I either don’t move or just slow down slightly if they’re a little ahead on the slip road
What happened after he gave you the finger?
Admittedly, sometimes i slow down to let traffic ahead clear / sort itself out, instead of joining the game of naughts n crosses
Sure enough 9/10 minutes later you got free road ahead.
its because they have sad little lives and picking on the big scary truck driver makes them feel better about themselves
if they want to play sill buggers just leavem to it or on the third attempt of getting past them as they start to speed up indicate left and give the back end a wiggle it tends to smarten them up sharpish and they either back off or eff off
This is why I hate being a truck-driver. I’d rather be working in an office somewhere, as you don’t get random members of the public giving you abuse as you go about your daily job of work.
not using their mirrors, their minds wander the start to slow down, next thing they know a lorry is overtaking them so they assume they are going slow, and no-one likes sitting behind a lorry, so they speed up, wee minute later, the cycle restarts
It makes me think are theese people so stupid not to realize who will come out worse, iv seen it for myself they slow down and when you go to overtake speed up pathetic or what
Maybe he knew the speed limit for a lorry on a DC is 50

This. 100%.
On these dark nights I have developed a new weapon in my armoury to deal with this sort of problem; I don’t bother moving into lane 2 because obviously they’ll speed up, leaving me out there impeding other traffic, I don’t flash my lights 'cos you just end up getting brake checked or irate over someone who really isn’t worth it. My new weapon is my headlight adjuster! I merely raise my headlights, the fool in front knows I’m not flashing him, but suddenly it’s uncomfortable for him to be there, he puts his foot down and bogs off into the distance. Result.
Sounds like bad driving all round. Why did he do it you ask? Maybe totally unaware or maybe to wind you up and it sounds like he did just that.
Why did you do what you did? You are meant to be the professional and all you needed to do was ease off leaving a good gap from him and he probably would have accelerated away in no time then you could have returned to speeding on the limiter.
As it is your blood pressure was probably sky high and the car driver was thinking there’s an other dozy truck driver I have wound up.

Very professional…and you admit to something like that on a forum. It is no wonder truck drivers are generally despised these days.

I’ve noticed this in my short time in driving lorry’s. I’ve had it done to me by a few class 1 drivers also. I gain on them and attempt an overtake at 52mph. I then see him look in to his mirror and then put the speed on. At this stage i am thinking “Why, why did you just do that you prick”. Short time later i gain on him again and he did the same thing but this time i gave him a flash and a bit of the horn which he got upset by it. Why do people not understand that there actions may ■■■■ other people off but then get upset because i showed signs of being fed up with his actions.
But i am getting wise to it now and pick my overtakes so this sort of thing won’t happen. the worst offenders for me though are Royal mail drivers. Do you need to be a ■■■■ to get a job there and be able to drive like one to?
Then head light adjuster is for when you are empty or loaded, as the beam goes up or down, i have never used mine, it is set on the nought position all the time.
