I paid for mine aswell, well it was a xmas present really.
Training was done by a firm that is no longer in Northampton, which means, yup you guessed it, dreaded test out of Weedon.
Failed first time, on a stupid little thing like not noticng a drunk on the opposite side of the road. Now if any of you know
Northampton and you know the Lodge Farm/Dallington r/about then you know the width of the road towards the town centre.
Even with cars parked both sides of the road its still wide enough to get two trucks past each other with a car inbetween.
Passed second time though, had a better examiner, he abandonned my gear change exercise due to too many vehicles about 
This was all three years ago last month.

Company wouldn’t put me through C&E because the only motor I’d be driving didn’t have the capability to tow anything.

passed class 1 in june 96 paid for myself passed second time after a 5 day course with british hgv of hednesford near cannock it cost £750
WOW - There’s lots that paid for it themselves.
I paid for my Cat ‘C’ and passed at Grimsby but got my PCV at First Leicester in 98. When I passed my ‘C’, I got an upgrade from PCV ‘Auto only’ to FULL PCV without having to take another test, and saving me loadsa dosh in the process.

I DIY’d both Class 2 & 1 in Northern Ireland about 1.5yrs ago now. Reason I went over tehre to do it was that it was considerably cheaper than the 2 local places.

I passed my class 2 10 years ago paid for by me at shrewsbury and my class 1 at swinerton also paid for by me
Passed Cat C August 2005 at Weedon, Northampton and paid for the pleasure.
Paid for it, passed in Caernarfon 2003 (class 2).
Wife Paid . paid her back now though , passed class 2 first time in Leicester with J coates.
Not done class 1 yet, (Wife ran out of money)
