My test (class 2) was paid for by Tilcon. I spent two weeks lodging in Pickering in February 1976 and took my test in Scarborough with Slaters Transport , who were part of the Tilling Group at that time, on a 1968 Foden 8 legger with tilt cab and 12 speed box. What was annoying was that there was an artic there at the time but because we had none at our place I had to stick with the rigid. Worst thing was the hydraulic throttle that leaked and you had to keep pumping it during the lesson or the revs dropped away. Passed first time anyway.
Before my test the examiner made a point of checking that the cab was fixed down ok, I found out later that on an earlier test the cab had tilted during the emergency stop, not only was he scared to death but he also had to fail the candidate!
I too am from the days when you could go straight to the old HGV1.
My first test was at Kirkby Ind Est, Liverpool, which I failed by making a pig’s ear of the reverse…
I passed at my second attempt, which was at Swynnerton.
My training was done in 1979 at BSM in Warrington. ( Yes, BSM had trucks back then!!)
Training costs were about £460 IIRC, which I paid out of my own pocket.
The vehicle for both tests was a Ford D1000 tractor unit and short single axle trailer.
got mine meself way back in 1974 ,when milkman /breadman etc used to have horse an cart. not so busy on the roads, basic truck tho ,no power steering ,bog standard brakes and ratchet handbrake.
Passed mine in teeside (4th)attempt,my company at the time, ryder, paid for mine which consisted of two week block booking then test, and subsequent re tests.
best feeling in the world when i got it!!.
Paid for it myself for some stupid reason. Passed the Class 1 first time on April 25th 1990 on a Bedford DL ex brewery truck with a 25’ single axle flat.
Then I came out here and failed the first time on a corner reknowned for being a pig, but that was paid for by BFS.
C at Yeading 2007 - Trained in my own DAF55 with an ex DSA Chief Examiner and VOSA Enforcement Officer (so they’re not all bad!)
C+E at Enfield 2008 - Trained with Roadtrain at South Mimms (wanted to train in a proper artic)
D at Yeading 2009 - Trained with Bains in Yeading.
All of them were first time passes and the Cat D was amazingly with zero Driver Faults - a perfect test.
Funny, if the examiner had seen my driving a couple of hours before the test, he wouldn’t have even given me a car licence, as nerves had definitely kicked in…! Got it together for the test though…
I can highly recommend both training schools - DSA approved instructors, which will keep ROG happy!
I went straight to class 1,mine was paid for by employer at the time [w nuttall clifton m/c] and passed first time at heywood m/c in 1971 after a weeks course in training school at mort lane tyldesly m/c.The site is now occupied by tyldesly distribution tpt.
Took my class1 test in january 1996 at culham nr abingdon with rollright training from enstone, passed first time which I couldnt belive as I was shaking like a leaf for the first 20 minutes, had 4 days plus my test day and paid £1000 out of my savings Best thing I ever did
