If your in lane 2 of a motorway side by side with someone in lane 1 then someone starts to join from the slip road what would you do?
If i was already alongside the truck in lane 1 i would stay where i was & carry on. Would be upto the truck joining the motorway to reduce speed or the truck in lane 1 to slow down etc

tyler4164 is correct legally BUT, and this would depend on the exact situation, could you SAFELY assist the joining vehicle without inconveniencing another road user
Each situation such as this will be different and can only be really answered if we were there at the time.
ADD - in advanced driving we say avoid three-in-a-bed situations like these by the use of forward planning BUT that is usually taught to car drivers - truckers have a disadvantage in trying to avoid this type of situation as the flexibility of the vehicle used is not the same
But ?
Motorway slip roads are clearly marked, those joining motorway should Give Way Stop if neccasary.
The advanced driving you talk about is not road traffic law.
We all know what your saying. but the laws dictates what we should or should not do.
Carry on.
Most people don’t tend to drive into 44 ton trucks when joining the motorway.
They think they can but they don’t.

In which order would these go…
SAFE
LEGAL
CONVENIENT (as poss)

Depends how close the vehicle joining the motorway was and how much risk of an accident there is, if I considered it safe for all then I would just carry on, if I thought some idiot was likely to cause an accident I’d react accordingly.
To some extent I can understand what ROG is saying, we all know that there are people who when joining a carriageway will act first and think second, how many of us haven’t seen people join a motorway oblivious to any danger they may be creating for themselves or others.
ROG:

No hard and fast rule for me I’m afraid. I would assess the situation every time something like that occurred and take the appropriate action.

3 vehicles abreast gives no-one any escape if something goes wrong
Sorry cant use keyboard properly tonite
I meant to add that if there was a large ‘convoy’ on the slip road then I would perhaps slow down and let whoever is in lane 1 out into lane 2 ahead, maybe not so if it was just a single car on the slip road as obviously they can vary their speed a lot quicker than a truck etc

Does not get any clearer.
If everyone did the correct thing. Everyone would be legal and safe.

26 years teaching and you condone stopping on a motorway at a give way sign

There’s no arguing with that, unfortunately in the real world people don’t always do the correct thing, I would say that a large proportion of the people I see joining motorways haven’t got a clue, anyway surely doing the “correct thing” must surely include reacting to stop a dangerous situation developing where possible.
Wheel Nut
As for me condoning stopping on the slip road YES i would stop if there was not enough space or time for me to enter safely. And yes i teach people to do so as that is the Law

Once again If everyone did the correct thing. Everyone would be legal and safe.Maybe it should be about educating the numpties that think they can just join the motorway.
As far as educating people about safe ways to merge with motorway traffic is concerned, I couldn’t agree more, it’s probably time for there to be compulsory motorway training before being allowed anywhere near one.

But by stopping you are just adding to the problem, instead of a slightly dangerous situation, you have just created an even more dangerous one.
The length of the sliproads are designed to give a vehicle chance to adjust their speed to the traffic already on the main road, When you stop at the end you have just redesigned that sliproad making it difficult for anyone else to join safely. Even on the urban motorways with part time traffic light control, the lights are way back up the sliproad, not on the give way line.
All it takes is for one or more vehicles to ease off for a second or two and let another vehicle merge.
Your way might be legal but it is a dam stupid way to teach anyone to drive.
I wont patronise you by pasting what the highway code advises, but I know which way is safest

As for stupid to teach people that way… They want to pass the test not fork out for a retest …
We may not agree but we do not examine the learners.
Test driving and Real Life driving are very differant.
Driving on the motorway
Joining the motorway. When you join the motorway you will normally approach it from a road on the left (a slip road) or from an adjoining motorway. You should
1 give priority to traffic already on the motorway
2 check the traffic on the motorway and match your speed to fit safely into the traffic flow in the left-hand lane
3 not cross solid white lines that separate lanes or use the hard shoulder
stay on the slip road if it continues as an extra lane on the motorway
4 remain in the left-hand lane long enough to adjust to the speed of traffic before considering overtaking
I thought SAFETY always came first - no matter what
- all the experts MUST be wrong
