I’m sure I once read that Brian Turner’s (chef off the telly) parents owned or ran Briggs’ - anybody?

What was the name of the cafe on the A2 northbound not too far before you joined the M2 at the top of a hill IIRC? I would always endeavour to have a breakfast there in the mid-70’s. I’m not advocating that it was the best breakfast but it kinda felt like it was after being away for anything up to 6 weeks when on the middle east runs.

Hi Ron, are you thinking of The Gate Cafe which was open 24 hours a day  I think that there was a pub not too far away on the opposite side called The Dunkirk or was that the name of the village  .

Regards Steve.

You could be right there, Steve…mental block syndrome, I’m afraid. Didn’t eventually become a Little Chef or some such place?

Kays of Caerleon was the place to go on the way up the road.lots of the south wales boys called in there when the A449 wasnt through to newport.you had to walk a mile to get in there some days as there were so many parked there.anyone else remember her.“awright drive” she,d say.them were the days when truckers stopped to help if you had a puncture.there were some tidy cafes about then.Brians was popular on the A38 not far off the M50 at tewksbury.handy in the morning when youd parked overnight in upton on severn.when he had an old shed of a place the grub was great but when he built a new brick cafe it wasnt so good.still better than services though.

Those of us on the continental side of Cadwalladers back in the 80’s would often stop at the Hollies where when ordering a meal would also ask for an envelope quoting your registration number which contained road permit/running money. This would be brought down from their yard in Oswestry by another driver (the envelope that is!). IIRC the Hollies was one of the few cafes that still had the teaspoon on a chain.

Brian Turners dad (Slippy) had a cafe on Hunslet road in Leeds It was a good spot, used to stop there in the early 60’s while doing 3 load a day Walton pit to Harrogate gas works. Those were the days BEFORE natural gas and this country still had a coal industry. :unamused:
2 brothers had the cafe up South Accommodation Rd. in Leeds but I can’t remember the names. (I’ve just seen welshphils post, Dunhills it was.)

Hi Brian, was the cafe at Hunslet the one next to Waddingtons, there was a slip road to the new M1 there?

hiya,
Chris there was a cafe on that junction i worked as a night tanker driver for Bayfords in about 1972 and remember calling in there in the morning for my brekkie on the way home to my sisters at Armley to save getting the frying pan out and possibly burning the house down, canny grub shop if i remember correctly.don’t remember the name of the place though, remember you had to go past the cafe to get to the depot, Waddingtons Games factory was on your left as you came down the sliproad when travelling from the south my last pump out was always at the now long gone Blackburn Meadows power station alongside the M1in your neck of the woods.
thanks harry long retired.

That’s the one Harry, but I can’t remember the name of it either, some decent looking girls worked in there but they had a funny dialect, not a bit like Sheffield.
Are Bayfords still going I wonder.I used to see them regular running out of Immingham when on nights meself, maybe out of Lindsey Oil Refinery for Fina or Total.

thanks brian, obviously i’d imagined the briggs’ bit  a few have mentioned the hollies - last time i ventured in there (maybe 8 year ago) i actually LEFT half the grub, highly unheard of for me :frowning:
