hiya,
There used to be an Italian cafe on York Way at the Holloway Prison end you could park there in the 60s Maria’s it was called, i always tried to get in there midday for "in her words " when shouting your order through the serving hatch, porka d chop mash a dpeas, mouthwatering fare and always the chance of a bit of stuff who’d just been released from the nick and wanting a lift up north.
thanks harry long retired.

Chris Webb:
There was a decent cafe just off the A10/Norf Circlar on the A111 Southgate Road,a Greek feller ran it and it was good snap in there, nice breakfast and a clean place.I used it regularly in the 70s rather than South Mimms or those rubbish MSAs further on.Bet it’s all double yellows now plus a weight limit etc etc.

Did you mean A111 Hedge Lane, the cafe was amongst a row of shops?
If so -all cleared away when the A406/A10 juction was enlarged mid 80’s.

hiya,
Got most of my career cholesterol infusions in Ma Greens/Normans on the A1 at Brotherton a brekkie and two big teas in there and i was sound until i hit the digs at night, called in the Quernow just before the new road gave it the heave-ho a while back what deterioration since i was there wearing the boilersuit a real dump, is it still going with access to it from the new bit of road.not that i’ll be bothering to patronise it again.
thanks harry long retired

I agree with you about the Quernhow Harry, I used it from the 60s and finally gave up on it about six years ago I dont think many of us will be going out of our way now that it’s bypassed. Regards Kevin.

I might be mistaken then - I thought some or all the shops (and cafe) had been demolished.
But apart from the odd night trunk or one-drop flyer it’s over 20 years since I went down there multi-dropping big time
and got to find dozens of cafes.

I seem to remember that cafe had the nickname ‘Paraffin Annies’!!!

Another good stop was on the A34 at Chievely just north of the M4.Its hard to realise this road was a main trunk route ( anyone not about to go out to grass as you travel south at Beedon look over to your right that narrow lane was the main road). God help you if you got stuck behind a not so “Mighty Antar” with a tank onboard. I remember that cafe being cleared double quick if anyone came in and said the “daft and barmy” were on the move cos apart from being bloody slow they were always breaking down. Its a good job the Ruskies weren’t on the warpath. regards kevmac47

There used to be a cafe called Sunway or Sunways on the left here as you went north a sort of nissan hut that you could drive right round.

Hiya Trev can,t you remember the cafe in penkridge■■? it was near barclays bank. it was possibly where the chip shop is now
it was a cracker. there was lorries along the road side and the cafe was crammed with drivers.mind you we,re talking the 70,s
John

John, I’ve lived here since the 70’s, I can’t say as I remember a cafe there, I always parked my truck at the Sunset.

Hiya Trev-H… the first time i went in the cafe (1969)i was going on a job at motor panels to have a tinker with a ERF steel cab.
The cafe was half full of ERF and Foden test drivers and was a stop of for them. I don,t think it was a transport cafe. it just
attracted drivers if you know what i mean.I,ve had some laughs in the sunset, mind you every one seemed to get on better
in the 60/70s.If you pulled in a cafe at the same time as another driver even if he was a stranger you,d speak and end up
sitting with them. that dosen,t seem to happen anymore.I had my truck medical on friday. it was in a camper van near the
pop,s in a layby. so i called into the pop,s for old time sake. it was crap!!! one driver at each table no one smiled. no pool table.
years ago at that old filthy smoke ridden cafe. the place was full of atmosphere. drivers walking around with cups of tea and playing pool.
everyone taking the mick out of any body doing anything but all the fun has gone now.
John

Spending most of my working life as a wagon driver I have been in good caffs and bad caffs. After leaving West Yorkshire [ who wants to live in Bradford? ] I settled in Lancashire and got a job driving a small draw bar trailer pulled by ******** Range Rover. After spending years roughing it at the cab hotel I know found myself staying in four star hotels. One night at the next restaurant table was Terry Venables {cannt ever remember seeing him at the Wharf Cafe in Newark. One morning at a four star hotel in Dundee I ordered a full scottish breakfast and when it arrived I couldnt believe my eyes= Fried Egg Scrambled Egg Bacon Gammon Beans Tomatoes Mushrooms Kidneys four different flavour of Sausages Black White and Fruit Pudding Fried Bread Bubble and Squeak Potatoe Waffles and Toast, This was over twenty years ago and cost £18,50. But I must say it was the best breakfast I have ever eaten {I didnt bother with lunch ] But in life nothing stays the same and now I am back in the real world of a cup of tea and a bacon sarnie.

two favs , the old blue star at lesmahagow lanarkshire and normans at brotherton yorkshire.

any one remember briggs cafe leeds, a one transport used it a lot
