hiya,
Chris there was a cafe on that junction i worked as a night tanker driver for Bayfords in about 1972 and remember calling in there in the morning for my brekkie on the way home to my sisters at Armley to save getting the frying pan out and possibly burning the house down, canny grub shop if i remember correctly.don’t remember the name of the place though, remember you had to go past the cafe to get to the depot, Waddingtons Games factory was on your left as you came down the sliproad when travelling from the south my last pump out was always at the now long gone Blackburn Meadows power station alongside the M1in your neck of the woods.
thanks harry long retired.

That’s the one Harry, but I can’t remember the name of it either, some decent looking girls worked in there but they had a funny dialect, not a bit like Sheffield.
Are Bayfords still going I wonder.I used to see them regular running out of Immingham when on nights meself, maybe out of Lindsey Oil Refinery for Fina or Total.

hiya,
Chris Bayfords are still going, or at least they was 6 months ago, met a couple coming towards me on the Wetherby Rd when i was making my way into Leeds no longer at Hunslet i don’t think, i’ve done a bit of Googling in the area where they used to be but no sign of them and the area of where the cafe was is very different, Google show Bayfords as being at Fleet lane Leeds now quite a big set up by the looks of it, i think we’ve spoken before the Immingham fuel job i occasionally used to pop in there for a load of cherry if the power station was off stream, had to change trailers for that one the water trailers was pure water only seemingly the least bit of impurity would damage the power station even mains water was’nt pure enough.

What was the name of the cafe on the A2 northbound not too far before you joined the M2 at the top of a hill IIRC? I would always endeavour to have a breakfast there in the mid-70’s. I’m not advocating that it was the best breakfast but it kinda felt like it was after being away for anything up to 6 weeks when on the middle east runs.

Hello mate,
It was called “THE GATE”. Top cafe but it was not as good as the WOODSIDE cafe just outside Goole in the 80s
Cliff

I thought this was the best place to post this old photo. The cafe was on charlie browns roundabout east london.

hi lads, back in the 60tys always had breakfast at Pete’s at aberford, it was the white building top of the hill just before you got to aberford on the right going south lots of north east drivers used it, always got extra bread to make a bacon sarnie for dinner time, Pete died with the big c   and the cafe just fell into ruins, the shell was flattened when they built the motorway bumper

Amazing isn’t it boyzee? can’t remember where I was yesterday without checking my diary, but a cafe I think I last used about 1977 no problem!!! regards kevmac47.

This building now occupies the site of a very good transport cafe. " The Shamrock " on the A5 near Wellington Shropshire, sadly no more.
Cheers Dave.

Used to go in there every day, It was a real good cafe and was popular with North Wales firms like Pritchards, Parry’s, R J Roberts etc. There was a haulage firm next door H R Maiden, I still see them about, so I presume they are still based there.

Same as you Trev, see their vehicles about a lot.I know they are from Telford, but don’t know their exact whereabouts.
Cheers Dave.

Dave, their yard was right behind the shamrock, maybe they moved elsewhere but they are still going…

Yes see them around Trev, also the entrance to Leaton Quarry is right by the side of it,hadn’t been along the old route for about three years, when we went on Tuesday to Telford,we went down that way, just as quick as on the dual carriageway, and far more interesting.
Cheers Dave.

I use that road Dave to cut across country to a friends house at Condover.

Have cut across country that way years ago, when the old A5 was closed or tailed back, but it’s no advantage to the A49 for me otherwise.
Cheers Dave.

Probably on Norstar or Norlander in the mid 70’s about two hours from Rotterdam all you could eat included in passage   and in them days I could eat for England, mind you I’m not so bad now   regards Big Al

I have to agree with you Al  , although if they would of served Alka Saltzer with it then it might of been the perfect brekky  .
