Thankyou Bubbs. Here you are Dave a motor I drove at the sweet age of 22, although I can not remember that Iveco badge on her. The only person I could think who added that was Gary, a Deri boy who worked in the garage until he went on the road. I tell you its unreal when you see a company you know, worked for or even better a motor you once drove. Just incredible!
Cheers Paul

Hi Paul ,
Alan Price’s wagons do come up to the quarries near here occasionally,do see quite a few of them when going down Merthyr area. There is a local tipper haulier, now retired, who originated from Bargoed, who has promised to dig some old tipper pics out for me.I need a tranquillizer gun,not a sedative.
Cheers Dave.

I thought the Alan Price Set was a pop group I didn’t realise he ran tippers in S. Wales Boyo !!! Cheers Bewick.

I watched the Manchester derby although I couldn’t make my mind up who I wanted to lose the arrogant Italians side or The Scum !!! Regarding Alan Price I didn’t think to go back as far as the Animals !! and what my conection is to Stoke City I have no idea although I did buy my first motor from Beeches in Hanley !! Hi Dennis,
Correct on the football, but a different match, was watching Liverpool v Spurs. The connection with Stoke City is a centre half named the same as yourself, who played for them in the 60’s and 70’s,was also manager off Sunderland for a while as well as other teams, don’t know where he is now, probably living up Kendal way.

Hi Dennis,
The operators with the four wheelers have their loads capped to 14 ton payyload,if you think about it the 6 wheelers only get paid for 16 ton payload, also there are only about five four wheelers, and a lot of people only want ten ton loads or less.
When the others are stood, they are usually still going.
Cheers Dave.

Point taken Dave !! but they can put 10/14 tons on a 6wheeler if and when required !! How many jobs are there that only require 10 tons ? I bet the operating costs of a 6 wheeler are not a lot differen’t than the “4” surely ■■ On the odd occaision a 10ton load is required .Cheers Dennis.PS Answer the question man !!!

Dennis, Its not in my nature to duck anything. You are missing a fundamental point,a four wheeler can get into peoples drives and narrow lanes with tight bends, where a six can’t,also a lot of other places. There are many places around these country area’s where even the four wheelers struggle, also they do a lot of shute work where they wait for the gangs to barrow tarmac off the lorry, whereupon they get paid waiting time, cheaper to pay waiting for a four than a six.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dennis,
Back to reasoned argument. I can see where you are coming from as regards to six wheelers. As you know 40 years ago there were loads of four wheelers doing all sorts of work, but economically they are no longer an option, also the use of six wheelers are fast becoming the same regarding tipper work.A lot of six wheeler owners have changed to eight wheelers, also artics carrying between 28 and 30 ton payload are taking loads previously done by eights. The big quarry owners are pushing the materials onto bigger vehicles, but at the same time cutting the rate, but that only works where the bigger vehicle can access the site or delivery point, as you would know from running your own fleet.
Cheers Dave.

Yea Dave you are correct but of course the arguments will still rage on !! I was involved with an oil distribution co during the 90s and we had a selection of tankers as some of the heating oil drops were a nightmare to get to ----- terrain up here is similar to yours !! Question – what does a 4 wheel Scany tipper tare off at and am I right in assuming it is 18tonne GVW ? And by the way I’ve just been reprimanded about my spelling so make sure you have your Oxford dictionary to hand or you might be in for one for one as-well .Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dave Havent been on for a few days My scania tares at 7.5 ton with a bulkrite body the same as the ones down your way. we dont always get a capped load at minffordd quarry only when the customer wants a 10 ton load or if its down a narrow lane where the big lorries have access problems.

Hi jonmea,
Thanks for clarifying the net weight of your Scania,as you know these down here have the same body as yours. They are more fortunate than you being capped to 14 tons, they did cut it on some of the older four wheelers this way,but two owners packed in.As far as I know there are five four wheelers operating out of the Strinds/Dolyhir and Gore quarries now, three like yours,a Daf and a Volvo FL6.When they are short of a four wheeler they do stick it on a six.
Cheers Dave.

hI Dave I used to get every load capped at 14 tons until last year. now only the small orders are capped but because i have got the only 4 wheeler in the quarry i keep going most days between the quarry work and my own customers. there are always some builders doing small jobs somewhere. sometimes they put a small load on a six if im to busy. i know scania are heavier than volvos or dafs but i prefer them. thats what i have been used to dad had his first scania 30 years ago and stayed with them since then.

Just remembered jonmea, there are only four of them in the qarries here now,one pulled his Scania out,as his wasn’t on the list to remain capped, that was last year. The way it is at the mmoment I think the four wheeler boys have a better chance of getting a full days work this way,the bigger rigids and artics haven’t had much on since before christmas due to the weather and general lack of work, also materials being sourced from other quarries. From what Ive heard the Scania owners are pleased with their 310’s like yourself.
Cheers Dave.
