Daf CF six wheeler roach coach, belonging to Powys County Council, seen on the A44 in Penybont Radnorshire. The home of the Wembley of Wales trotting races for over seventy years.
Thought I’d rudely barge into the 4-wheeler debate and say that up here they do still get 14t per load, no matter what they carry (AFAIK).
To be honest, they will always try and put every load on the contract 8-wheelers and sod everybody else. Only people sticking to their guns and insisting on smaller vehicles has kept us alive since the recession really bit.

Hi jonmea,
Thanks for clarifying the net weight of your Scania,as you know these down here have the same body as yours. They are more fortunate than you being capped to 14 tons, they did cut it on some of the older four wheelers this way,but two owners packed in.As far as I know there are five four wheelers operating out of the Strinds/Dolyhir and Gore quarries now, three like yours,a Daf and a Volvo FL6.When they are short of a four wheeler they do stick it on a six.
Cheers Dave.hI Dave I used to get every load capped at 14 tons until last year. now only the small orders are capped but because i have got the only 4 wheeler in the quarry i keep going most days between the quarry work and my own customers. there are always some builders doing small jobs somewhere. sometimes they put a small load on a six if im to busy. i know scania are heavier than volvos or dafs but i prefer them. thats what i have been used to dad had his first scania 30 years ago and stayed with them since then.
Just remembered jonmea, there are only four of them in the qarries here now,one pulled his Scania out,as his wasn’t on the list to remain capped, that was last year. The way it is at the mmoment I think the four wheeler boys have a better chance of getting a full days work this way,the bigger rigids and artics haven’t had much on since before christmas due to the weather and general lack of work, also materials being sourced from other quarries. From what Ive heard the Scania owners are pleased with their 310’s like yourself.
Cheers Dave.

Ah ah Dave my boy opened a can of worms have I !! So all is not what it seems with the generous Quarry owners eh! Question what do these 310BHP Scany 4 wheelers do to the gallon (Bearing in mind they are running M/T one way ). I re-call thinking I was the Dogs in the late 60s with a 180BHP ■■■■■■■ V8 !! But I always managed to be loaded both ways on A Licence but the ■■■■■■■ from memory could still manage 9/10 Mpg with a good steady driver on it ( mentioning no names like ) Cheers Dennis.

Hi Hammer everything is changing here in Minffordd now since it changed from western to central and as always the haulier is the last to now what is going on. There arent any contract lorries here now only a few in tarmac colours.
Hi hammer,
Don’t think they have sorted the contracts out this way yet. I know some have been told they have got contracts, others who have signed haven’t heard yet. They sometimes split a twenty ton order and give it to the four wheelers, shh.
Cheers Dave.

OK OK Dave but you are comparing 1960s technology with state of the art and I was making the point that I was fully loaded for almost every mile (90/95% anyway ) so economy hasn’t improved dramatically in40 odd years has it !! My harness horses were pacing the mile in 2 minutes in 1989/ 1990 and they are just better than 2 minutes now but they will probably be recieving help from the "Chemists to go better than 2 minutes !!So its taken 20 years for the breed to improve ever so slightly same applies to motors over the last 40 years or so !! Ha the good old two speed axle Dennis, much underated in my opinion. I was a big fan of two speed axle’s,being able to use that half a gear made all the difference, and the upward change was fast, just lift the button ease the throttle and through she went,a nice fast change,no clutch.

Dennis,
I had a mate a mate who was riding pillion on a moterbike, when a sheepdog ran after them,my mate had a bow saw in his hand, and swung it at the dog and caught it by the neck,he held onto it and dragged it by its arse for about 80 yards,it never chased a moterbike again.
Cheers Dave.
Small lorry this time.
Mercedes 814 seen on the A44 near New Radnor.
hiya,
Dave only once loaded hay back in the middle 70s Durham to Holland I used a 50ft trailer to get the weight without being too high, it was lucky to get out of Durham with the lean i’d built into it but the yard forklift with a stack of pallets on the forks transposed it into a reasonable looking effort and it was allowed on the ferry without me being at the handlebars it was sent on night trunk and i went to Appledore Devon with a wide load of steel plate about three inches high, I think i must have loaded the hay with my specs skewwhiff, funny they never sent me on that job again.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Harry,
Its funny stuff to load, you can never tell with hay,its a bit of a live load, the bales can shift all over the place if you are not careful, have pitched loads of the stuff years ago, three of us used to go around hauling bales of hay and straw for farmers back in the 60’s,use their tractors and tralers, got paid 10 bob an hour cash, not bad, used to knock up quite a bit of money nights and weekends during the summer,my then girlfreind didn’t go much on me harvesting and neglecting her.
Cheers Dave.
Hi Dave. Found a couple of pics of dads artic loaded with hay
He always prefered to carry small bales. The round bales always moved.
