One of J & B Bulk Haulage, MAN artic’s from Cricklade, loaded outside the Gore Quarry.
I wouldn’t mind a quid for every hour that I have spent in that spot Dave, waiting for the tacho to tick round so that I could set off on the 3 1/2 hour trip back home!
Pete.
Hi Pete,
Everyone is wondering abut the future of the place,a general feeling elsewhere as you know, spent a bit of time there myself throwing the sheet over a load of tarmac myself years ago. We didn’t have to sheet anything else.
Cheers Dave.
Interesting pics Dave, certainly not allowed to tip excess material like that at my old quarry! You have to get someone from the weighbridge to supervise you, you are not allowed in the back of any truck, laden or empty, the cab door has to be locked when at the weighbridge or the plants and the engine switched off, seat belts must be worn when in the quarry (if your truck doesn’t have a belt fitted then you don’t get loaded) and there is CCTV to ensure that you do it if not you get banned for a day or so. Tarmac’s elf n safety carried out to the letter!
Small wonder that the quarry, one of the largest in Derbyshire, has practically closed now.

Hi Pete,
They have a lot of rules an regs at the Gore, don’t think they have enough manpower to supervise unloading the excess, also the trucks are running whilst on the weighbridge, although they do remain in the cab,the place is busy as far as tonnage going out,but the bigger percentage is done by artics,as they only do dry from there now,all the tarmac is done from Strinds/Dolyhir. The winds of change are definately getting stronger, same as up your way, with a lot of concerned owners and drivers.
Cheers Dave.
Ello Dave, is there a bit of meeting going on this week, reguarding how many trucks they dont want in the new year up in strinds/doliyhr &the gore, glad we parted company when we did ,it was a bad expierience even with a mixer on for them.

Hi finn,
Quite possibly, the word is that they are going to cull a lot of the lorries, also if they sign a contract its £6,000 a vehicle, which they keep as a backup, for repairs or whatever, how much is fact,I don’t know,as always there is a lot of rumour and speculation. Its got to be a worry for any one that owns or drives from those places, with a very uncertain
future. I personally don’t think they will need a cull,a lot will be starved out, with it being quiet, and having a lot of overheads.
Cheers Dave.
Fin,
Trouble is it’s not just a local issue,it applies to all their quarries and sandpits, they have been told to shed x amount of jobs,so it’s inevitable that hauliers are going to get a hammering, they cut the rates nationally at the beginning of october by 2.5%,when every thing including diesel is going up. The thing is,they know that these blokes have nowhere else to go.
Cheers Dave.

Serious comment this Dave I’m not militant but there comes a time when these guy’s need an independant leader to negtiate on their behalf !! How do you fancy the Job !!! Regards Bewick
Besides my old Tarmac quarry closing the Bardon quarry and coating plant about 4 miles away is also shutting down and the plant cut up. Several scheme lorries in there who can go up to Buxton to work, but the other lads have nothing. Some of the guys that I worked with have done nothing for over a month now and are either scrapping their wagons or trying to sell them, unless you are in tarmacs colours you wont get a load, and even some of those are not wanted at times. If and when the work returns then where are the materials coming from and who will cart it?

Hi Bewick,
Glad to see you are back on board. I think it will take someone with a lot of clout to do any good. The only thing that will help,is if a lot of big jobs come off,and thats not going to happen until the recession is over, which isn’t going to happen for a long time,in my opinion. As Pete Windrush say’s its the same where he comes from, its a national thing. There will probably be a lot of work up in ■■■■■■■ where you are, trying to get things running again and putting in roads to these temorary bridges that are being put in to help people get around,. The thing is this lot are trying to sell,so they are cutting to put the some in their pockets, before they hand it over to another big fish.
Cheers Dave.
Quite a lot of artics hauling out of the Gore, the last few months, some from South Wales, some from Bayston Hill, not sure which this one coming onto the weighbridge is from.
The problem with the quarries are that they only want you in colours because they know that they’ve got you by the balls then. ‘Doing your own work’ is frowned upon and your less likely to bugger off if you get a better offer.
I’ve seen lads who have hauled out of local places for 30-40years discarded almost overnight. Shame. In local places I’m familair with they are sacking good lads on the ground left, right and centre yet call centre jobs are left untouched. In these offices all they are doing is the job of the weighbridgeman, who now sits watching TV all day. Instead of planning the work, he just punches in your reg. no. and it tells him what card to give you. How does this possibly save a firm money?
Basically, its “I’m saving money by splitting this job in two and paying two wages. Also, I’m putting in a telematics system which costs a load but I read its brilliant in Commercial Motor so it must be saving me cash”. Tough to go anywhere with ideas like that flying around.
Good luck to all the tipper boys, contract or private over the next few months. I fear we’re gonna need it.

Hi Andrew,
They are getting £3 a ton for a fifty mile round trip,if they are lucky they might do five loads, probably only four, not much for running an artic as you know, most of the SW boys are from south cornelly, only thing is,Bayston Hill Shrewsbury artics are here as well.
cHEERS dAVE.
