So, Weathersoons is hoping to open a pub on the M40 services at beaconsfield, currently the sale of alcohol is banned in motorway services, but apparently a change of the rules could be considered.
Good or Bad idea?
News: Wetherspoon’s PUBS at motorway services
Extra, M40, News, Wetherspoon’s
According to several news articles, Wetherspoon’s are due to open the motorway’s first pub at Beaconsfield on the M40, operatoed by Extra. But the Deaprtment for Transport clearly state that alcohol is not to be sold at motorway services. However, the rule is currently being reconsidered, and if the rule is withdrawn, the pub will open in a few months’ time.

Neither: It’s part of the agenda in-keeping with liberal opportunities to give generic consumers (that’s us) a choice.
Whether or not a consumer makes a correct and proper decision, (eg, one that’s legal and properly ‘informed’) depends upon the thickness and/or gambling tendency of each individual.
What does UK society democratically want/need?
I’ll kick off by suggesting the polar opposites. Do we wish for:
1 Full-on Nannying or 2 The UK as an Idiot’s Paradise
Meanwhile - and to diversify our decision, the Government have binned Old Plod in his Jam Butty from detering Road Muppets
It’s a great idea, especially for anyone on a night out.
How they behave regarding drinking too much or even stopping for a pint on a motorway well anyone could fill a hip flask and drink it incognito if they have that much of a problem. We are responsible for our own actions, it’s not that pubs fault if something tragic happens.
What he said. Be interesting to see if it does happen, whether the prices would be in line with the high street establishments, as this would mean the possibility of a good plate of dinner at something considerably cheaper than the service station price.
Prehaps if there was somewhere drivers could park up relax & unwind with a meal,a drink & a bit of conversation there would be less hyper-active freaks out there!(Bob?)
What’s the difference between having a pint in a pub in the high street if parked up or having a pint in the services of parked up?
I don’t park in services so doesn’t really bother me, but maybe if it was somewhere I could wander off to, sit down, have a bar meal and pint it might encourager me to use them?
I often used to use wetherspoons in Edinburgh airport when I was parked up at marshalls food mill, but it was a lot more than high street prices.
I’m gonna guess the difference on a high street is you aren’t driving straight in to a 70mph lane full of unpredictable dangers. On a high street or town pub there’s so many obstacles you’re slowing down all the time. I wouldn’t like to go straight on a motorway after 2 pints but I’m sure some would think its ok.
As been said they don’t only sell alcohol and after eating some of the slop I’ve eaten in truck stops and services in the uk I’d snap your hand off for a spoons surf and turf for 10(comes with a free drink to) all week long!
Beaconsfield isn’t strictly speaking a motorway service area. It’s a service area next to a motorway junction but is also accessible from all the other roads around there. Seems a good idea,as well as truck drivers there are people staying in the hotel there.

are you saying you’d fine driving down a high street after 2 pints? Two way traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, CHILDREN…etc.

i dont see an issue with it at all ! in fact being able to stop at a services get a meal and a decent coffee at a fair price is very appealing pub dosent atomaticly me your going to drink does it ?
Mike-C:
I think its a brilliant idea, you don’t have to have a beer in wetherspoons they do coffees and stuff too, and the food is great, for what it is.
Exactly what I thought. Especially if they don’t go ott on the prices. Alright food for good money.

lighten up ya tool. You did say you wouldn’t like to drive straight on to a motorway after 2 pints. You never said you wouldn’t like to drive down the high street. Mind you if I was to have a pint in wetherspoons and get lumbered with the likes of you, I’ll give it a miss. X

I don’t do nights out any more so I wouldn’t be in there
You read something out of nothing you’re the tool chillax life is too short
Be ok until one of the trucknet police call the old bill as they see a lorry driver having a pint.
So what if he is finished for the day that’s not good enough for some on here.
Over here in Euroland having a drink with a meal is normal. So for me, no problems changing the rules. After all, as some other people have pointed out, you could go and buy a case of beer, sit in your cab and get hammered. If anything, a pub would be more controlled. And half decent food.
Cheers
Paul

I can see some of the handwringers on here now already. Camera and notebook at the the ready to gather evidence on any driver that dares step foot in the devils church of wetherspoons. “officer, impound that vehicle and arrest that man. He has had an alcoholic beverage. He might drive and kill people.”
