I refused to drive a vehicle when none of the 12v electrics were working. As it would have left me without my satnav or phone.

I felt a bit of a fool and have now ordered a truck map. I actually like the idea of not having a phone to be harassed by.

My phone charger and sat nav work fine in the 24v sockets.

Was a while ago. But truck only had one single 12v socket. It had one/two of the smaller type but they don’t fit my phone or satnav.

Can’t remember the model - but it was a manual so pretty old. Company had a workshop on site and fixed it eventually.

That is just embarrassing tbh. What did the firm think of that I wonder [emoji849]

Don’t know what they thought. In fairness - it would have been a lot more embaressing if I took it out and got lost with no way of calling for help. Remember I am agency and new, I’d never been there before or drove to the places I was going before.

Wonder if company directors sit around wondering what the driver think of them when he turns up and the truck doesn’t work properly and is full of dirt. Even their mechanic/fitter said it was disgusting.

Did you check the fuses? I always make sure my phone is fully charged before my shift, just in case.

No. As an agency driver I’d not be comfortable doing that unless told to.

The fitter did though. It was something else. Can’t remember the name for it diffa of giffa or something like that.

We expect exactly the same off agency drivers as we do our company drivers, we are often left disappointed. Surely changing a fuse is well within the capabilities of a PhD electrical engineering student. Frankly, I’m surprised no one in the office passed him a fuse and said ā€œhere you goā€.

The difference between your company drivers and agency drivers is that the company drivers know what’s expected. Why should an agency driver take the risk of getting grief rather than just letting someone else sort it? If the company had asked me to try fuses and given me a multimeter and tools I’d have done my best to work out what the problem was.

I recently got to go home after 15 mins because an indicator was out. I offered to change it. I even offered to drive my car to get a bulb. But the rules at that company were only mechanics/fitters could do it. If I’d have just done it and was caught I’d have got grief. If I’d have damaged something it would have been a real hassle.

I brought one of those 12v battery packs for charging phones. So long as phone and sat nav charged it will keep it topped up through your shift. Only cost about a tenner

Sammym mate…We aint talking about ā€˜ā€˜multimeters and tools’’ we’re talking visually checking a fuse to see if it’s blown ! . :bulb:

Seriously mate, you’re doing nothing to dispel the myth here that many new drivers are a waste of space and need to be told when to breathe both in…and out. :unamused:
Ffs! :unamused:

Once I took my own initiative and put diesel in a wagon. The problem was the company claimed that I went off route to do so. And tried to knock me 4 hours money because of this… I was told by the agency I should always check with transport and the agency before i did anything. So why would I start ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  around with fuses when it’s not my problem? I get paid to tell them it’s not working and sit there and let the hours roll on whilst I’m reading a book.

This is all ignoring that it wasn’t a fuse… So if I had spent half an hour mucking around it wouldn’t have helped me out anyway.

I don’t think you have the foggiest idea how some companies treat new drivers. They will look for reasons to blame you. I still remember being accused of driving with the handbrake cable on meaning it snapped - again trying not to pay me. There is zero benefit for me going the extra mile.

Ok mate, I’m fully aware that unfortunately modern ā€˜Logistical Solutions’’ co.s (or whatever tf the latest buzz word bullcrap label is :unamused: ) want non initiative robot/yesmen, I personally could not (or would not) comply, I’d jack first.

Ok, fair enough that’s easy for me to say as a guy with long term experience, but things have only got that way because drivers have allowed it over the years instead of kicking off against it. :bulb:

We’re doing ā€˜optimisation’ now, it seems to involve doing more empty miles than ever before, must be better for the mpg figures?

Some utter twonk somewhere fell off a milk tanker . Now we are forbidden to go up the ladders . Only qualified persons with a safety harness and another qualified ā€œhelperā€ are allowed on top of tanks . If those qualifed persons are not on site you pull the tank out the gate with the milk splashing out the top , stop , up the ladder , close the lids in full view of the offices and no one says a word .
You could not make this ā– ā– ā– ā–  up .

Sounds like my old firm. Not allowed onto back of wagon to strap down scaffold on a building site (where H+S is a joke) but if you stop outside the gate, after driving over rough ground with an unsecured load then that’s just peachy.

Any road map will do as long as you can read and take notice of road signs and by using the tongue in your head to ask for directions once you get within the town/area you want to be

You’re talking a foreign language to the sat nav generation mate
A sat nav it is an absolute necessity to these guys like a right arm is to you and me, not an option to do without one for a day.
Some carry a spare, others have time off until they can replace them  …as for phones some would not dream of going out of the house without one.
