I refused to drive a vehicle when none of the 12v electrics were working. As it would have left me without my satnav or phone.
I felt a bit of a fool and have now ordered a truck map. I actually like the idea of not having a phone to be harassed by.
I think I would have been more embarrassed for people to think as a lorry Driver I could not do without a satnav or phone.
Any road map will do as long as you can read and take notice of road signs and by using the tongue in your head to ask for directions once you get within the town/area you want to be
I’ve just come back from a shift. And am about to go to sleep. Good luck asking for directions at 3/4am in the morning to a business that is closed and which you have to open up to deliver stuff too.

Well we used to manage just that…without the need for good luck.
Use some ■■■■ initiative man !

In the oldern days, how did we find places at night in the dark, O I know, we used maps and A2Zs, seemed to work ok.

Used to work abroad too I remember, when all we had was a Shell Card and change for the phone
Seriously though, even if you had just offered to look at the fuse they could always say no, why be deliberately unhelpful. Despite the chip you have, firms do not go out of their way to blame young (or old) drivers.
From my point of view the most frustrating thing an agency driver can do is start putting obstacles up before even turning the key in the ignition.

Fantastic. How much did a full set of A2Z’s cost in comparison to a cheap trucknav?
And what about when the A2Z’s had coffee spilt on them or got lost… Or were out of date. Unlike my satnav which is updated 4 times a year.
I’m all for people telling me that the olden days were better. And in some ways I’m sure they were. I do have to question why the old boys now have satnavs and don’t carry around a bag of A2Z’s though…
My maps certainly didn’t/don’t cost £300+, and I don’t/didnt have to buy a new one every 4 months!!! And as for the coffee stains, just look after the equipment you use!

Nobody is disputing that sat navs are great … (if used properly )
I use one myself, never used A2Zs for years now.
Difference between you, and as you put it…‘‘the old boys’’ is ‘‘the old boys’’ could then (and still could now) do the job fine without a one…where as you couldn’t.

When I left my job in 2004 that covered the whole of the UK I gave them all my A-Zs, about £1k’s worth (some of which were paid for by expenses), some were well out of date, some had the most used pages loose/missing (particularly the Greater London A-Z), some were the very old B&W maps that were the only option before the coloured county & city maps. The thing was back then I spent a great deal of time planning and writing down my routes, M-ways, A-roads, B-roads, road names and learnt a lot about many parts of the country, blindly following a coloured line on the screen teaches you nothing other than following a coloured line on a screen.

Didn’t have A-Zs for Europe, just a Europe atlas, which got me to the right town. I do think the use of Sat navs mean you never develop that sixth sense of where somewhere might be.
I don’t usually reply to sammym, but break a rule of my own. Maybe you aren’t looking for a job and agency fits better with your academic requirements, but first off you never know when someone might offer you a job based on what they see, or not offer on what they see. I’ve offered a job to a young lad based on what I saw while he worked casual at someone else’s yard. Secondly, I don’t care how good or bad an outfit is, you always do your best because it’s down to self-respect. Heavens knows I’ve worked for some pretty awful companies in the past, but that didn’t mean I took my foot off the pedal, metaphorically speaking.
I bought A to Z’s for the major cities, for the rest I “perused” the shelf with them on in the services armed with a pen and paper and drew my own map. Simples

Oh God yes, how many times have I done that !! European services no problem, pick up the map and search and say thank you on your way out, having bought a coffee too of course.

Just think, these days you could take a photo with your mobile, oh, hang on, google maps!
