hi rowly,
you sir,are a man after my own heart
regards andrew.
pete 359, was that a 240 but with a 290 grille ?
I think (!) I remember reading that the very last of the 240s (1976 or 1977) had the wider grille, flush mounted so they looked like 89s. Does anyone else remember this, or am I going potty?
pete have you still got the 88 looks like its been about a bit 4 different pics prob the BRS is as it should be, Get yourself down to the Tyne Tees run !st Sunday in June

That one of Daniel Stewarts is a beauty - and on the 88 / Stewart theme, does anyone remember the one in the Stewarts Cream of the Barley livery? Lovely motor and used to see it a lot late 80’s / early 90’s coming down the Mickey 6 (get digging Bubbs)

As far as I remember the grille didnt distinguish between an F89 or F88, all of the 290 UK models had a wider grille though
I remember two other types of grille, the small plastic one with a diagonal line and a plain black full width grille. The only difference on the front between the 240 and 290 340 was that the front flap didnt close flush
I would still drive that a skip lorry, notice the bubble fuel tank and obligatory tow bar under the front bumper
hi wheelnut wish i could get hold of a bubbletank for my 89 any ideas regards rowland

I reckon there will be some of these sat in a dealers somewhere, possibly with a couple of spare cabs, doors and panels
I wish I knew where…
I remember that Panalpina had a fully trimmed cab sat in their workshop in Hull years after they stopped running them and started running Mercs. Frank Bramley will have had that one away

I always thought the 88 290 grille was double thickness than the 89’s ■■ Also the 290’s as well as the front flap not flush had a different air cleaner stack with a round top & located on the nearside

Yes generally the Stack on an 89 was on the right when looking at the rear of the cab, the 88 was on the left, not sure whether the 290 was the only one to have a round 86 type cleaner
Yes it was , the 240 had same stack as 89 , oh & the grille on the 290 was double thickness

Which was why the front flap didnt close properly?

Yeah- i think because of the intercooler fitted ■■

None of the F88/89 range had intercooled engines, I believe it was to aid cooling on the hotter running 290.
Ross.
My first ever Lorry stood there so great
and the vehicle was Swedish made.
Brand new and brightly shining and her
name is Volvo F88 so high and strong.
When I so proud stood locking on you my
hearth was banging so hard so hard and
your windshield was as two blue eyes
And my eyes meted yours and I melted.
Then I walked towards you my friend
My face was only a large smile. I laid
my hand on your door handle, opened
the door and climbed up, grabbed the
steering wheel and swung me upp as I
never in my life had did before.
I was as young and anxious as you!
Then I saw me around in the cabin and
and the drivers seat vas so soft and nice.
I believed I was in the seventy heavens
when my eyes fell on the velocity and
all these warning lamps and the stick,
then with both my hands I took hard
around the large black coloured wheel.
So I laid the gear in neutral and pulled
the clutch down and started my girl up.
My hand took the stick, change gear to
four low and slowly I release the clutch
and away we go my little darling and me
humming “Oh, can you believe I run a
F88 as will be my home for fine year?”
During our years together we have had
It so nice and you nearly started every
Morning but you also failed but I forgive
My old girl because we were so happy
Together. Now many years has gone I have
Never forgot you. How should I do that?
You are forever remembered in my hearth
Because you were the best Lorry I ever
Had the honour to have driven
Lars-Gunnar as never have driven a F88
Hiya…I did.
it was the year of 74
i got just what i’d been wishing for
for it was a brand new 88
Oh dam i was only the drivers mate
off we drove to London town
changing gears up and down…(not very often)
for it was everyone’s dream
to drive this super swede machine
driving along with 290 brake
the hills become a piece of cake
ERF… Foden …Bedford too
was no match for the 88 and her crew
down Holaway road and into Bow
changing gears to and fro
for now we’re near… the dock gate
with 20 tons of export freight
she’s done it again our trusty steed … Volvo F 88 my super… Swede
John ( That’s 10 mins of wasted time) for you and me !!!
Beautiful poem 3300John so rhythmic and nice!
