Stirling 9509:
You are correct. The first full width black plastic grille’s were seen on the F89 and these were about 30mm thick.
When the ‘UK’ F88-290 came out in 1975, they modified this grille by inserting another 30mm filler to make it protrude out further to accomodate the larger radiator. The dipstick flap was flush on the F89 but on the F88-290 this flap was pushed out at the top with small rubber triangular flaps each side. The flap is held shut by coil springs.
Regards.
Stirling.
Lance Biscomb:
If you look at the real F89 with the cab tilted in the desert, you can see the grille is only an inch deep, not two inch like on the model. Sorry for being an F88/F89 anorak and causing all this trouble over a grille but I am right!!
Don’t panic but just for the record my model doesn’t run either !! but it has got a 6 cylinder engine and a volvo one at that !!
Jimski, get a tree branch and go outside and beat the living daylights out of yourself, you’ve put a 290 grille on an 89 ffs, all those hours of work you put in creating a near perfect replica of such an iconic lorry have been ruined by your faux pas, I’m disgusted
I also notice that the handprints in the fantastically realistic dirt on the door are not an accurate representation of those of David Miller. You should be in the Tower for your lack of accuracy.
I shall now remove my tongue from my cheek and go back and marvel at the photos of your work, avoiding that grille of course
Not wanting to re-ignite the cab front grille debate , heres a photograph of J.D. Crawford & Co. Ltd. s Volvo climbing Midland Hill , on the A 685 out of Kirkby Stephen , earlier this year.

Hiya…now what can we do. thats the wrong top on the air intake how can life go on…like we need an air box!!! this will fit.
well bloody fit it then, get down the road and earn some money.
with this F88 240/290/F89 thing is if there was a smashed up 290
in the yard and your lorry was only a 240 you fixed a go faster grill.in some cases after a crash your repair couldn’t get a 240 grill
so lets fit a 290 grill, the driver dosen’t mind he thinks it will go faster. it could be the other way round, you,d smacked your 290.
there was a 240 down the yard.get that grill and make it fit, if the driver hadn’t run up the back of someone else he’d still have
his wide grill .easy…it wasn’t like todays motors one and only one thing fits so the motor is off the road for practically nothing
years ago things would swap over lorries needed to keep running so what would fit got fitted
Hi David Miller, don’t know why but the 190N pics have disappeard , had a problem before with photobucket and it seems to have reappeared so here’s a couple with out the aid of photobucket !!
